This chunky monkey smoothie is a super simple recipe to be used as a healthy post workout shake or a real food based chocolate smoothie to curb cravings.
Protein shakes are a staple in my house both because I workout consistently and because amino acids are an essential component of a healthy immune system. And truthfully, they taste good (have you tried this key lime protein shake??). Plus, having healthy smoothie recipes on hand just make it easier to take in a bunch of nutrients.
Between my obsession with cookies and my need for daily chocolate, it’s a wonder I’m not overweight or experiencing chest pains 😛
But the truth is, I have just simply found healthier versions of these indulgences.

The Perks Of The Chunky Monkey Smoothie Recipe
One of the most used superfoods in my house is cacao powder (check out my most-used superfoods), not to be mistaken for cocoa powder.
Organic cacao powder contains more calcium than cow’s milk, more antioxidants than blueberries is a wonderful source of iron. Plus, it gives everything a chocolate flavor! Check out the benefits of cacao.
It’s cacao powder that gives this chunky monkey smoothie it’s chocolate flavor but also the added nutrient boost.
When you combine cacao powder with a sweetener (bananas, dates, maple syrup etc) you get a delicious chocolate flavor that you can customize based on your preference- this is actually the only “chocolate” my daughter knows! I personally love this technique and use it far too often.
This smoothie is also creamy, sweet and makes an awesome post-workout shake or even healthy snack.
While I’m not too strict on the breakdown of macronutrients post-workout, I do try to get in some nutrients to refuel.

Ingredients In The Chunky Monkey Smoothie
- 1 banana, frozen
- 1 scoop vanilla protein powder (vegan or whey)
- 5 ice cubes
- 3 tablespoons raw cacao powder
- 1 tablespoon almond butter
- 1 date
- 1/4 cup oats
- 3/4 cups almond milk

How To Make The Chunky Monkey Shake
In a blender, combine everything but almond milk.
Pour milk overtop.
Blend on high until combined and smooth.
You may need to use a tamper as the smoothie is thick.
Note: If you don’t have a powerful blender you may want to chop the bananas before blending them!
In a small bowl, whisk together the ingredients for the healthy caramel topping.
Pour the smoothie into a glass.
Place the caramel drizzle into a ziplock bag, cut the corner tip off and drizzle over smoothie.
Makes one large smoothie or two small.
