Candy canes for breakfast? What kid can say no to that?
These high-protein baked oats can be prepped the night before and cooked in the morning (just like these candy cane overnight oats with protein powder).
This means that you get to spend more time enjoying the moment on Christmas and less time in the kitchen- these cranberry maple chicken thighs work for this too!
They have a chewy base with a sweet peppermint flavor and you can top them with your favorite whole30 whipped cream to make them more indulgent (or just enjoy these paleo candy cane donuts).
As a mom, I adore these banana-free baked oats because they’re simple. But as a Certified Nutrition Coach, I love them because they're high in protein making them perfect to kick off the day (learn more about the benefits of a high protein diet) and a great way to support the 12 days of Christmas workout.
Why You'll Love These Baked Oats
- Allergy-friendly: these baked oats are dairy-free, gluten-free, and nut-free so that no one with allergies misses out.
- High in protein: protein helps us stay full and energized. With 19 grams of protein per serving these baked oats are a great way to start the morning.
- Easy to make: all you need to do is blend the baked oats, pour, and then bake which means they come together super fast.
- Make them ahead of time: these baked oats can actually be made the night before and then just baked in the morning to save time.
- Versatile: not only can you swap the candy canes for another flavor (like chocolate chips) but you can also make these baked oats in individual portions or a baking loaf with slices.
Ingredients You’ll Need
Though most protein-baked oatmeal recipes will call for bananas, you won’t find them here! These blended oats are sweetened with honey instead and completely banana free.
Old fashioned rolled oats: make sure that they’re certified gluten-free if you need them to be. Unfortunately, quick oats and steel-cut oats don’t tend to work as well for this recipe. Learn more about different types of oats and how to use them.
Egg whites: an added bit of protein but the egg whites also help hold the blended baked oats without banana together.
Collagen powder: the secret in this baked oats recipe! Collagen powder is the cleanest source of protein you can choose!
Baking powder: you want the protein baked oats to rise but not too much.
Honey: this gives a bit of sweetness to the morning. Though maple syrup will work in its place, it will change the texture slightly.
Peppermint extract: a little bit goes a long way so don’t overdo it!
Hemp milk: any non-dairy milk will work for baked oats. We use homemade hemp milk or almond milk the most though.
Crushed candy canes: candy canes, Christmas sprinkles, or both! Add in your favorite festive choice and watch the kiddos' eyes light up in the morning.
How To Make Baked Oats Without Bananas
There are actually two different ways to make this baked oats recipe. The instructions below go over how to make them in a loaf pan.
Step 1: In a blender, combine all the ingredients except the candy canes.
Step 2: Process for 1-2 minutes.
Step 3: Pour the mixture into a lined loaf pan and sprinkle in some crushed candy canes. Swirl with a fork.
Step 4: Bake in the oven for 40-50 minutes. Let cool slightly and top with your favorites.
Important Teaching Tips
These high-protein baked oats are made without bananas which means that they’re sweet but not too sweet. Likewise, bananas tend to thicken the oats. These blended baked oats are light but chewy instead of thick or creamy.
Not all the oats will blend when you process them- that’s okay! Just make sure to distribute the mixture evenly so one is not all liquid and the other all oats.
You know the baked oats are done when you insert a toothpick into the middle of them and it comes out almost clean.
To meal prep the recipe: blend the protein-baked oats ingredients, get them into the baking loaf and mix in your candy canes. Then, pop it in the fridge overnight. In the morning, let them sit at room temperature for a few minutes before baking.
Love the recipe but don't want to make it Christmas-themed? Opt for regular sprinkled or chocolate chips in place of candy canes!
If making these baked oats in a loaf pan, make sure to line it first otherwise they will stick.
If making this baked oats recipe and portioning them into silicone molds so that everyone can top their own, you will only need to bake them for 20 minutes.
Topping The Oats
The protein-baked oats without bananas are delicious just as they’re made.
However, for Christmas morning we like to top ours with homemade whole30 whipped cream, homemade caramel sauce, drizzled nut butter, or dairy-free chocolate ganache to make it extra special.
And more candy canes of course.
Choosing Collagen Powder
It’s no surprise that these Christmas baked oats are made with collagen powder!

Honestly, as a busy mom collagen powder just makes it easy to eat more protein and not feel like I’m living off chicken and eggs.

Silicone Molds
When you make these protein baked oats and portion them individually, use individual silicone molds. This means that different molds may cook slightly differently.
These are the molds that I use and we love them because they’re the perfect serving size.

Though whey protein powder may be able to be subbed in for the collagen powder it may alter the texture a bit. Know that vegan protein powder can definitely not be used as it absorbs too much liquid.
If you have leftover baked oatmeal you can store them in an airtight container in the fridge. When you reheat them, do it on the stove and add a bit more milk to them so they don’t dry out. Or, pop the leftovers into a smoothie to make it extra thick!

This is great for Christmas morning. With a bit of meal prep, we have an impressive and nutritious breakfast. And it is not only for Christmas. I can make it for other occasions, and substitute chopped dried fruit and seasonal spices for the candy canes and peppermint.

You definitely can! We have a chocolate one we love too, so many flavor options!

With alpha-gal syndrome, I cannot consume any mammalian products, so I'm always looking for good sources of protein that work for my food allergy. While regular collagen is out, this seems like it will work with marine collagen (which is safe for us alpha gals). Do you agree? Can't wait to try this!

Why reserve for Christmas such a guilt-free treat? We would love to have it every morning!!
fitasamamabear
Haha yes!!!

You have the best recipes ever- I love your blog- keep posting please! If not using this for Christmas and skipping the candy canes, could I use vanilla extract instead of peppermint & do sprinkles? Or any suggestions to make variations of this?
fitasamamabear
You are the sweetest, thank you! And yep, vanilla is a wicked variation. I personally add chocolate chips or sometimes nuts to it too.
