Keeping a stash of high protein snack recipes in the freezer (our favorite being these protein peanut butter cups) is a hack I swear by as a Certified Nutrition Coach. This way, when you have a wicked sweet craving or are running out the door, you have some fuel to grab and munch on.

As a coach, I recommend all my SMASH Fit For Life clients take in at least 100 grams of protein per day (learn more about the benefits of a high protein diet) and it’s snacks like this that help them do that outside of their main meals.

These frozen yogurt protein bars are made with a dairy-free Greek yogurt and collagen powder to amp up their intake. They have only 10 grams of carbs per bar and are a delicious flavor combination that you can use for a snack or protein dessert. This is the whole premise behind my Strong and Sweet Protein Guide: creating dessert-like snacks with 17 grams of protein each.

    Why You'll Love This Recipe

Easy to make: There are only 5 ingredients in the yogurt protein bars which makes them easy to whip up. All you have to do is mix, pour, and freeze.

Healthy: The bars are naturally dairy-free, gluten-free, high in protein and low in carbs making them a great choice any time of day.

Versatile: Use them with the kids to cool down in the summer or as a snack for yourself. Swap the flavor for something new or enjoy the classic peanut butter and chocolate. These bars are just SIMPLE.

    Ingredients and Substitutions

Below is a quick shot of what you need to make the frozen yogurt protein bars. Keep in mind that you’ll want to use a natural peanut butter so that it mixes a bit easier with the yogurt.

Greek yogurt: Being dairy-free I use a vegan Greek yogurt for the recipe. However, any Greek yogurt that you tolerate will work. Know that the bars were made with a vanilla-flavored yogurt. If you use a plain yogurt you may want to add more sweetener or maple syrup.

Don’t use non-fat yogurt, it makes the bars icy instead of creamy and you’ll miss out on the protein.

Honey can work in place of maple syrup.

    Flavor Variations

Peanut butter chocolate chip is a classic flavor combination and a staple in my house. However, there are lots of ways to vary these frozen yogurt protein bars to create new tastes.

Yogurt: Use a different flavored yogurt for the base. We love raspberry yogurt for a pop of freshness.

Nut butter: Almond or almond-hazelnut butter are both delicious swaps that give a new richness.

Crunch: In place of chocolate chips, try adding toasted pecans to the mix or pistachios.

Drizzle: Amp up the indulgence and make these frozen yogurt bars part of a celebration by drizzling them with homemade caramel sauce.

Fruity: Add chopped strawberries, raspberries, or blackberries to the yogurt.

    Expert Tips To Make It

You can’t really mess these protein bars up. Learn more about how to make homemade protein bars in general, but know that these ones are pretty simple.

Take care to smooth the batter down in the loaf pan to remove any air bubbles and make sure that to protein bars set properly. A silicone loaf pan works best, I find but a regular one lined with parchment paper is great too!

You’ll want the bars to sit at room temperature for 5-10 minutes before you enjoy them. Right out of the freezer, they are completely solid. After sitting for 5 minutes, they’re deliciously refreshing.

Step 1: Mix together all the ingredients except the chocolate chips until smooth.

Step 2: Stir in the chocolate chips.

Step 4: Top with more chocolate chips if using and pop into the freezer to set.

Step 5: Remove the bars from the freezer and loaf pan. Slice evenly.

Step 6: Enjoy the protein bars or pop them back in the freezer to store them.

    How To Store Them

The yogurt protein bars must be stored in the freezer. You can place them in a freezer-safe bag, but make sure to separate each bar by parchment paper as they do freeze together easily.

They’ll stay fresh for up to 3 months. To enjoy them, let them sit on the counter for 5 minutes before biting in.

    FAQs

Can I use whey protein in place of collagen?

I’m sure you can but I haven’t tried. Whey protein and collagen tend to be similar in how they absorb when mixed so it should be okay. Vegan protein powder on the other hand absorbs liquid like crazy so you’d need to scale the amount back.

Can I omit the collagen powder?

You can but it will change the texture of the bars slightly (I would add in a tiny bit more peanut butter) and it will remove a lot of the protein in the bars.
