Hi, I’m Shelby, and WELCOME to Fit As A Mama Bear!
In the real world, I’m a strength coach, nutrition coach & chronic foodie (you can check out my training business here). Three years ago I became a mama bear to the best little girl in the world – and then I added another little cub join the clan!
What seems like ages ago, I was a restaurant manager, smoker and fast food junkie. In the last few years my life has done a complete switch (read more about my full journey to health here) and I’ve never been happier.
Now-a-days, I’m that health freak, the fitness junkie. That natural mama who often goes against the norm. It’s a role I never thought I’d be in. But it’s a role I love.
Baby Bear has taught me more in three years than I’ve learned in a lifetime. And it’s with that in mind that I strive to be as healthy as possible while still enjoying day to day pleasures.
On Fit As A Mama Bear you’ll find fitness advice geared towards moms, healthy (and tasty!) recipes, some parenting tips and of course my attempts (and fails!) at creating a holistic, natural home. I want my daughters to grow up strong, confident and full of laughter each and every day.
I believe that fitness should be fun, food should be deceivingly healthy and parenting will never be easy so you might as well enjoy the stumbles!
Currently I train part time and the remainder of my week is geared towards recipe development and food photography. If you’re a blogger looking to collaborate, here’s more information about how we can work together.

I am a firm believer that fitness should be fun! Dreading & despising your workouts won’t get you the results you’re looking for. Instead, experiment with different workouts, laugh and enjoy the journey – it’s a hard balance so don’t take it too seriously!

Who doesn’t love tasty food? Food is one one of my absolute passions! I really do live to eat. But I also believe that food is fuel and thus I aim to create nutritious meals.
You won’t find any processed sugar in my recipes and some of them may push you outside your comfort zone. But what you will find are tasty and nutritious meals (and snacks) full of quality ingredients that are sure to boost your health, your immune system and your taste buds.

Mommin’ ain’t easy. A truer statement has never been spoken. Each day is an adventure with Baby Bear and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
I believe that all moms are just trying to do their best for their little ones. No matter what your parenting style – rock it. Seriously, only you know your babe best so trust yourself!
As a natural mama I have chosen to do the parenting thing a bit differently than some and this section is dedicated to my experiences, what I’ve learned and why I make the choices I do.

Naturally, as a Nutrition Coach I am a chronic foodie. Seriously, I love it! Playing around in my kitchen is one of my favorite pass-times. But I don’t always agree with the advice given surrounding food.
I believe that the focus of food shouldn’t first be the amount of calories but the nutrients in it instead. My personal goal is to make food fun, healthy and tasty all at once. I want my daughter to grow up enjoying food while at the same time getting the fuel she needs to be an active kid.
In other words, you should be able to have your cake & eat it too … though in my cakes you won’t find any processed sugar. In this section you’ll find lots of healthy nutrition advice, tips & tricks.

Over the last few years I’ve worked hard to make some big changes in my household and beauty routine (read about that holistic journey here). And much of that has been making my own products! Partially because of the research I have done regarding harmful ingredients & sensitivities and in other part because I’m Dutch and thus, classically frugal.
While many of our household products are now homemade, I am constantly trying new recipes and ideas. Some of which are epic fails and some glorious successes. Regardless, this section is here to help you make some of your own holistic home changes and hopefully bring out the DIY’er in you.

Being pregnant is kind of it’s own entity! Especially for a fit mama, that belly can come with some big challenges.
Throughout both of my pregnancies I aimed to stay as fit and healthy as possible. Not only does staying active help in labor but truthfully, it also keeps you sane.
In this section you’ll find a bit of everything. What I struggled wiith during pregnancy, how I arranged my activity, postpartum help and anything else you can think of.
