    Why Choose Diy Beauty Products

You may have stumbled on this page because you want to learn more about natural skincare. Or perhaps you already know that you should make the switch to natural options but they’re pricey as hell.

Either way, you’re in the right spot.

Without meaning to, many of us lather up with an alarming amount of chemicals each and every day just by what we use on our skin!

Business Insider mentions “The law does not require cosmetic products and ingredients, other than color additives, to have FDA approval before they go on the market". And unfortunately, this is true for “natural” beauty products also.

The truth is, we simply don’t know what is really in the beauty products we purchase and how they may affect our health.

    • Acne
    • Hormone alterations
    • Infertility
    • Skin issues
    • Thyroid issues

These are just some of the problems we’re beginning to see from the ingredients in skincare. There are tons of ingredients you’ll want to avoid if you’re trying to transition to natural living within your beauty products.

So why not just make your own?

With diy beauty products you know exactly what’s in them. They’re all-natural, not harmful and easy to whip up. Plus, you’ll end up saving some money too!

Crucial Ingredients For Diy Lotions & Diy Lip Balm

One of the easiest transitions when it comes to diy beauty or skin care is diy lotions and diy lip balm. This is where I began my transition and it was perfect.

    Diy lotions Are:

    • Insanely simple to make
    • Only require a few ingredients (normally under five)
    • Save you a ton of money

The average “natural” lotion on the market is about twenty bucks. Given how often we use lotion, that money adds up!

Making your own diy lotion is far cheaper and after the detox period works far better. All you need is:

    • A butter (shae, cacao or mango)
    • Coconut Oil
    • Another carrier oil (almond, apricot kernel, jojoba)- I love this trio because you get mini bottles of three killer oils and you can try to see which ones you like best!
    • Beeswax
    • Essential oils for scent

With those five ingredients you can make an unlimited amount of diy beauty products. Diy lotion, lip balm, salves. The list goes on.

All of the butters work amazingly, but if you want to get specific with your diy lotion, read more about which butter to chose for your diy recipe.

Coconut oil is a staple for just about everything you’ll make. It’s extremely hydrating to the skin and it helps firm up many diy lotion recipes because it’s solid at a colder temperature.

Carrier oils help keep the skin silky. You don’t need much for most diy recipes (especially diy lip balm!) but they do make a difference to the feel of them.

Beeswax is your binder. It’s what firms everything up so you aren’t just rubbing oils all over. It’s what makes diy lip balm work when poured into tubes.

These ingredients are simple and will carry you through hundreds of diy beauty products. Below are a few of my favorites:

    • My absolute favorite, chocolate peppermint diy lip balm
    • Diy lotion – citrus scented
    • Whipped peppermint body butter
    • Diy belly butter
    • Homemade muscle rub

Another fun thing to do is add unique ingredients to make the homemade body butter with beeswax more nourishing! Cacao powder and matcha green eta are favorites of mine!

    Diy Bath Bombs

If there’s one thing everyone loves its soaking into a big tub with a bath bomb! And since bath bombs go for $5-6 per bomb it really just makes sense to make your own.

Commercial bath bombs may look beautiful, but many of them are loaded with parabens, dyes and fragrances. These ingredients have been linked to neurological issues, fertility, reduced immune system and endocrine problems. It’s upsetting that companies don’t have to list these issues.

Diy bath bombs may seem complex but once you get the hang of it, they’re simple.

When making DIY bath bombs, you really only need the following ingredients:

    • Baking soda
    • Epsom salt
    • citric acid
    • arrowroot powder
    • coloring (if using)
    • essential oils

Learning how to make your own bath bombs sometimes requires a bit of practice. But having all-natural ones on hand is well worth it.

Plus, diy bath bombs are easy to customize! Diy recipes for sleep, stress and headaches all require the same ingredients just different essential oils.

    Equipment For Diy Beauty Products

While there are some basic items you’ll want, you don’t really need anything fancy. Below is a list of tools I use depending on that I’m making. Some of these items you’ll already have and others you’ll need to grab.

Thankfully, diy beauty products don’t require anything too fancy. If you’re making diy gifts (more on that below), you’ll need packaging. But otherwise, the basics will do!

Diy Lip Balm & Diy Lotions

    • A small pot
    • A glass jar that can withstand heat
    • Small mason jars for the final product
    • Mini whisk
    • Mini funnel
    • Lip balm tubes

    Diy Bath Bombs

    • One large bowl and one mini bowl
    • A silicone spatula
    • Rubber gloves
    • Bath bomb molds
    • Silicone Molds

    Other Diy Recipes

I normally keep the following things on hand for anything else I want to whip up. This includes diy laundry detergent, diy room spray, baby wipe spray, diy sugar scrubs etc. Not necessary but nice to have on hand for when you need them!

    • Mini glass spray bottles
    • Large spray bottles (use old Perrier bottles and just grab a nozzle from the dollar store!)
    • Large glass jars
    • Silicone candy molds
    • Shakers
    • Roller Bottles

    Diy Gifts

One of the absolute best parts about natural living and making diy beauty products is giving them away for gifts!!

Diy Christmas gifts are super thoughtful and budget friendly. My favorite thing to do is take a roundup of diy spa gifts and turn them into super cute spa baskets which you can customize for everyone.

Outside of the normal equipment, all you really need is a basket of some sort to contain everything and cellophane wrap with some twine (especially for the diy bath bombs).

Really, diy gifts are such a great idea for friends, neighbors and teacher appreciation gifts. And if you’re not sure if the receiver would love it, grab a gift card and pair it with a diy lip balm. Easiest gift ever and still thoughtful.

    Diy Beauty Product Tips

I’ve been making my own natural beauty products for roughly six years now and trust me, there have been a lot of fails.

Which also means that I’ve learned a ton of lessons! You can read more about the do’s and don’t of diy beauty products but here’s a few basic tips.

    Don’t get water into anything

Water causes mold and then your diy recipe will turn pretty gross pretty quickly! So, at all costs, do not let water get into your lotions or scrubs.

    Use one jar for melting

Try to only use on jar or pot for melting your ingredients together. The oils stain for the most part and you’ll never get the jar fully clean. Thus, it’s easier to just wipe it out with a paper towel (while it’s still warm!) and be done with it.

Do not put the melting jar in the dishwasher (see water rule). Plus, water and oil doesn’t work.

    Label Your Diy Products

I always think I’ll “remember” what the diy beauty product is and I never do. Throw a label (even if it’s just masking tape!) onto the jar so you don’t forget if it’s baby wipe spray or kitchen cleaner *said from experience*

    Diy Recipes Using Essential Oils

There’s far more on this subject than I’m going to get into. And I am most definitely not a registered aromatherapist, herbalist or doctor. So, take everything with a grain of salt.

First off, I’d make sure you’re using quality essential oils. The cheaper ones are synthetic, and we can’t be sure how they’ll react on your skin. You can learn more about essential oils in my podcast regarding kids, but I’d say to always grab pure grade ones.

Many people think they have an allergy to lavender essential oil but when they try a real one, they have no symptoms.

    Amounts

I need to research this more. There are specific amounts per oil ration when it comes to adding essential oils to your diy beauty products, but I don’t know them.

I always err on the side of caution and go lower because too many makes me nervous. Remember, your skin absorbs everything on it. Too much of a good thing does not make anything better.

Random tip: if using citrus essential oils know that you can’t use them in the summertime for lotions or diy lip balms. Citrus attracts the sun and you tend to burn.

Almond oil is great for your skin. It gives you a beautiful natural glow. First, you need to clean your face and then apply almond oil all over.
