If you're tired of dealing with dry, chapped lips, this DIY honey sugar lip scrub is what you need. Made in just 5 minutes this easy-to-make sugar scrub is a natural and cost-effective way to exfoliate dead skin cells, hydrate your lips, and promote circulation, leaving them feeling renewed and refreshed
Our lips are a sensitive area that is left vulnerable to the elements. If you're struggling with chapped lips, this honey and sugar lip scrub may be just what you need.
Easy to make: made with just five ingredients you probably already have on hand.
Smells amazing: the combination of honey and vanilla is a great mood boost.
Effective: soft enough for the lips but works well as an all-around body scrub to exfoliate the skin.
Ingredients You'll Need
White sugar: you want white sugar for this homemade lip scrub recipe because it's so fine. This makes the lip scrub non-abrasive.
Pink salt: again you want to get a finely ground salt as the larger chunks are just too hard on delicate areas like the lips and face.
Raw honey: honey is moisturizing and soothing but it also has antibacterial properties! This is why you want raw, unpasteurized honey for the homemade lip scrub. So that you can reap the benefits of cleaning the area and boosting the recovery of the cells.
Vanilla extract: the honey plus vanilla makes for a wonderfully soothing, calming scent that lingers on your lips. You can of course use an essential oil in the lip scrubfor this but the extract in your cupboard works just as well.
Avocado oil: don't use coconut oil for this recipe as it'll harden and change the recipe. Avocado or olive oil works best.
How To Make It
- Grind the pink salt into fine flour.
- Add the sugar and salt into a small bowl and pour in the oil. Mix lightly.
- Add in the honey and vanilla and mix until fully combined.
- Portion into jars or containers and enjoy!

How To Use The DIY Sugar Lip Scrub
In addition to using it on my lips I find this homemade lip scrub works really well on my face too especially for removing dry, dead skin. Though, if you have oily skin, do a test patch first.
As for the rest of your body, I find that you need a bit more of a harder scrub to do the legs. Even though this one feels amazing it doesn’t exfoliate tougher skin surfaces outside the lips and face as well.
To use the lip scrub: rub a bit of the scrub gently on your lips for one full minute. Then, rinse with warm water.
How Is The Lip Scrub So Effective?
One of the issues with many scrubs is that they can be really abrasive. Keep in mind, the point of a scrub isn’t to rip off layers of skin. It’s to gently help take away the dead skin and then hydrate them.
Considering this, the combination of salt, sugar, and honey accomplishes this beautifully.
If you’re feeling generous, whip up a big batch and give them out as thoughtful presents to friends, neighbors, and teachers. That way, everyone can enjoy silky lips!
Making It Into A Homemade Gift
Save some money this year and opt for thoughtful, homemade gifts instead! Indeed, this lip scrub recipe is a beautiful homemade gift or part of a homemade gift like in a spa basket.
Eliminate the need to buy a zillion things and just make your own. Not only does this save cost-wise but you can also customize the gifts based on personal preference which is insanely thoughtful.
This homemade DIY lip scrub recipe is definitely simple but it makes a beautiful gift.

Frequently Asked Questions About DIY Sugar Scrubs
DIY scrubs are as easy as whipping up a few common household ingredients! Make sure to use sugar and not too much salt for lip and face scrubs as the latter is much more abrasive on delicate skin.
Most DIY sugar scrubs will last 6-8 weeks when stored in a dark place. Make sure not to get any water into the lip scrub mixture or jar when using though as water will cause them to mold.

DIY Honey And Sugar Lip Scrub
Equipment
- Mini Mason Jars
Ingredients
- ½ cup white sugar
- ½ cup himalayan salt fine grind
- ¼ cup avocado oil
- 2 tablespoons raw honey
- 1.5 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
Instructions
- If your salt is course, grind the pink salt into a fine flour. The courser you leave it the harder it will be on your lips.
- Prep and measure all your ingredients.
- Add the sugar and salt into a small bowl and pour in the oil. Mix lightly.
- Add in the honey and vanilla and mix until fully combined.
- Portion the lip scrub into jars or containers and enjoy!
- Recipe makes one large cup of scrub packed- which is perfect for multiple gifts! If using for yourself, cut the recipe in half or even a quarter.
- To Use: apply a generous amount to your lips and gently massage. Rinse off with warm water.
Notes
- Using liquid honey will be easier but you can use harder, raw honey also. Either heat it up slightly before adding or be prepared to mix a bit harder.
- Make sure to use very finely ground pink salt otherwise the lip scrub will be too harsh on the lips

OMG this so pretty, I haven't used pink Himalayan salt in a lip scrub before. I usually use sugar, but... not you got me thinking. Thanks Shelby!
fitasamamabear
I normally use sugar too! But it was there.. and it was pink! I made it initially for a gift and I wanted to make it pretty haha

Is there a certain amount of time you can keep these before they are bad?
fitasamamabear
The average is a couple of weeks. In my experience the biggest factor is water: if you get water in the jar (dipping a wet hand into it) it goes moldy pretty fast (a couple of days). If you never get water in the jar... I've had some of mine for six months lol

Just a question - if i do not have avocado oil is there other oils that would work fine?
I have jojoba, coconut, and olive oil - would any of those work? If not I have no problem getting the oil 🙂
fitasamamabear
Jojoba and olive oil will work perfectly! They're pretty interchangeable. Coconut oil you'd have to melt/make sure it's liquid. Thanks for dropping by!

This looks so good! What a great gift for friends or to enjoy yourself!

Thank you! It's definitely a great one to have on hand!

Thanks for sharing! Does it keep long?
fitasamamabear
So I find that it's best used in the first few weeks. However, as long as you don't get water in it, I've had mine for upwards of three months. If using for yourself though I'd make a smaller batch and just make it fresh.
