Not sure which butter to choose when making natural skincare products? Learn the difference between shea butter, mango butter, and cocoa butter and which ones to choose for DIY lotions and lip chaps.
The benefit of DIY skincare products is that it's easy to customize your recipe to suit your specific needs.
While all three of the main butters used in homemade skincare products are similar, each has its own properties and benefits.
However, they also have lots of similarities. Each butter is:
- Nourishing
- Hydrating
- Easy to use
- Can be combined with oils
Which Butter Is Best For Skincare?
While not necessarily the best, shea butter is the most popular. Shae butter works with all skin types as well as provides benefits for all types.
It’s an anti0inflammatory butter and can moisturize as well as soothe the skin
Texture Of The Butters
Each butter varies slightly in texture with shae butter being the softest. Mango and cacao butter are harder and need to be cut or broken in order to measure.
Once melted the butters resemble each other and mix similarly.
Cacao Versus Cocoa
You may have noticed that the title of this blog post lists “cacao” powder but the chart below lists “cocoa”.
Essentially these are the same thing. However, like cacao and cocoa powders, there are some fine differences (learn more about them here).
The biggest difference between the butters is that cacao butter is the least processed. Both stem from the same plant. Cocoa butter goes through a bit more of a heating process than its counterpart which makes it slightly less nutrient-dense.
Outside of that, they’re pretty much interchangeable.
Other Butters For Skincare Products
While these three butters are the most popular, they’re not at all the only ones! Some other amazing, unique butters include:
Olive Butter
Rich in antioxidants and makes for a great anti-aging lotion ingredient. Olive butter helps with extremely dry, itchy skin. Helps make skin soft and reduce lines.
Hemp Seed Butter
Very high in omega threes and so a great protector for the skin especially against damaging sun rays. Hemp butter is also relieving to super dry skin.
Kokum Butter
An insanely healing butter and helps repair skin cells and support elasticity. Kokum butter is a great choice for calloused skin. Learn more about what kokum butter is here.
