An easy recipe for DIY lip balm. This chocolate cinnamon DIY lip balm for dry lips is made with all-natural ingredients and no essential oils. With only five ingredients, this cinnamon-infused homemade lip balm recipe is healing and a great solution for cracked lips (as is this citrus lip balm recipe).
A great DIY product for pre-teens and a thoughtful gift for friends and family.

It's no secret in my family that I'm a lip chap fiend. For Christmas, my hubby even got me a lip chap holder I can attach to my keys! It's magical (literally.. it's Harry Potter!!).
The point is, I take lip chap everywhere and on a regular basis have about four to six on the go. This is because, when you opt for DIY lip chaps and use quality ingredients, you end up with nourishing, hydrated, soft lips. Yay!
This lip balm for dry lips is perfect for the colder winter months when your lips are cracked and battling the elements. It's simple to whip up and smells amazing right under your nose. And of course, this tinted lip balm recipe is perfect for adding a bit of color to your lips!
Why You Should Make DIY Lip Balm For Dry Lips
- Cost-effective
- Nourishing
- Fragrance-free (which is huge to me because fragrance has connections to unpleasant side effects)
- All-natural
- Makes a wonderful homemade gift idea or part of a spa basket for friends and family (you can also use them in goodie bags for events like bridal or baby showers)
The reason I like making homemade lip chap is simply that I know what’s in it. The ingredients are natural, nourishing, and health-promoting. You can check out where I buy my ingredients and my favorite brands here.
Side rant: Have you ever used the EWG app on your phone? In short version, this app lets you scan a product and tells you what the cancer risk of it is by giving it a rating between one and ten. One is good for you and ten being deathly. This is the app I used to help me rate baby products when it came to using anything store-bought on my girls.
Even organic made products normally come in around a three. This blows my mind.
I like making my own lip chap because I know exactly what's in it and what's going into my body.
Choosing Quality Ingredients
In order for this DIY lip balm recipe for dry lips to be effective, you need quality ingredients! This homemade lip balm is made with only five, natural ingredients and comes together quickly.
This particular lip balm recipe for dry lips is based on my all-time favorite dip lip balm: chocolate peppermint lip chap) but with a twist of cinnamon!
The reason that this DIY lip balm recipe is so effective is that the ingredients are known for:
- hydration
- anti-inflammatory
- healing
- protection
Cacao butter is one of my favorites to work with because I find it keeps my lips ultra-hydrated but not as oily as straight shea butter. It also gives the lip balm recipe a nice consistency and of course, adds a chocolate smell!
Coconut oil and shea butter help keep your lips smooth and beeswax keeps everything together. Beeswax also acts as a barrier and helps protect your lips or skin from the elements.
Protection from the elements, especially in the winter is why I love having homemade body butter with beeswax on hand too!
And just like this recipe uses actual cinnamon versus the oil, this healing lip balm recipe uses real lemon balm to help nourish and aid your lips.
The Texture
This homemade lip balm recipe comes out smelling of chocolate and cinnamon (a wonderful combo in the wintertime) and goes on smooth. It does have coconut oil in it so the cooler it gets the more firm it will be.
However, I find that at room temperature, it goes on perfectly. There is a bit of oil to it but it absorbs within minutes.
Essential Oils For Dry Lips
While I am definitely pro-essential oils, I always find that natural is best. Considering this, essential oils are concentrated versions of something and so I like to opt for the natural version when I can.
While you can make this homemade lip balm recipe with cinnamon essential oils, you can also make it by infusing chunks of the cinnamon stick into the oil.
Cinnamon has been known to have antibacterial properties, as well as help, elevate your mood. This makes it a wonderful addition to a winter lip balm recipe! However, cinnamon is very potent and it's easy to use it in excess through the winter months. The oil can even cause burning if you add too much into a lip balm recipe.
This is why I prefer to use cinnamon sticks for this DIY lip balm recipe for dry lips instead. You get all the mood and scent benefits without the risk.
Storing It
When it comes to a homemade lip balm recipe, you can either make it and pour it into lip chap tubes or use tin and put it onto your lips with your finger.
Personally, I always use tubes as getting oil on my fingers drives me nuts.
So long as you don't get water into the lip chap mixture (either from it boiling and splashing in when melting or in the tubes themselves), the homemade lip chaps will last a couple of months. I've actually had lip chaps for over a year.
It's water that causes mold which obviously causes them to go bad so that's what you need to be cautious of.

How To Make It
In a heat-safe jar, add the first four ingredients.
Place the cinnamon stick in a plastic bag and crush with a hammer. You don't want it to be powder, just small broken pieces.

Add the cinnamon to the jar.
Heat a small pot of water until a rolling boil (about two inches of water). Add the jar into the water.

Let the jar sit in the water while the ingredients melt fully. Once melted, whisk. Leave the jar in the hot water for 15-20 minutes so that the cinnamon can infuse.
In the meantime, set up your lip chap containers.

When ready, remove the jar from the water and strain the mixture through a mesh strainer to remove the cinnamon.
Using a small funnel pour the mixture into the tubes until full.

You'll need to move very quickly as the mixture begins to harden immediately. Let sit on the counter for twenty-four hours to set.
Makes 5-6 lip chaps depending on size of tubes.

This actually looks like a fun project to do with my daughter. I hate all the crap products that most kids are in to so if she actually got to make her own, she'd probably love it! Putting on the list of summer activites.

What a great idea! And she could customize the scent if she wants which may make her excited. Love it!

So true, I use bees wax pellets in my homemade lip balm too. I've made cinnamon lip balm and hot cocoa lip balm. But I've never combined to the two flavors and scents... great idea!! I'll be trying this recipe for sure!

Mmmm hot cocoa... The chocolate cinnamon combo is a great one, you'll love it!
