But for those times when you need a quick fix, grabbing one of these energy balls is a sure fire way to give you a boost!
Why You'll Love These Energy Balls

- Easy to whip up
- School safe (nut-free)
- Immune boosting
- Funky color so a hit with kids
Ingredients You'll Need
Dates: this is what naturally sweetens the spirulina energy balls! A natural sugar that also has a ton of fiber. Soak your dates in warm water for twenty minutes so that they blend better. This is also the secret to omega 3 brownie bites.
Shredded coconut: make sure to use unsweetened coconut to avoid added sugars. The finely shredded stuff works best as larger coconut flakes make it so that the balls don't hold together as well.
Hemp hearts: a dose of omega-three fats and of those a ton of them are omega threes! Plus, these little seeds have a good amount of plant-based protein.
Coconut flour: this helps absorb the liquid in the balls so that they hold together.
Collagen powder: this powder is a protein powerhouse and helps boost the immune system as well. Learn more about the difference between collagen powder and bone broth.
Greens powder: both spirulina powder and chlorella powder work for this recipe and both are loaded with amazing, energy-boosting properties.
How To Make Spirulina Energy Balls
- In a food processor, blend the dates until a paste forms.
- Place the remaining ingredients in a large bowl.
- Add in the date paste and mix until combined. Slowly add the date water and mix until sticky.
- Using your hands, roll the mixture into balls.
- Place the balls on the parchment paper and place them into the freezer for thirty minutes.
Important Teaching Tips
These superfood energy balls can be stored in the fridge or the freezer. One of the things I love most about homemade energy balls is that dates don't fully freeze! Thus, you can actually grab one of the balls right out of the freezer and pop it into your mouth.
Though dates are used as the base, figs work just as well!
Make sure to soak the dates to make it easier on your food processor and so that they come out smooth.
Grease your hands with coconut oil to roll the balls as they are quite sticky. This prevents the spirulina balls from sticking to your hands and help them hold together.
Both blue and green spirulina can be used.

Crucial Prodcuts
Spriulina is part of the algae family and I can't say enough about it!
This algae is potent and helps with your immune system, production of white blood cells, and more.
Learn more about algae and the best way to work it into your diet.
Though these balls are technically spirulina balls, I actually like mixing and matching spirulina and chlorella.
You can grab both collagen powder as well as chlorella powder from Perfect Supplements. This is one of the brands I trust most when it comes to superfoods because they have such high standards for quality.

Frequently Asked Questions About Gluten-Free Spirulina Balls
Dates are a natural sugar source and normally used as the base in homemade energy balls. If you need to omit them, dried figs work in a similar way. Make sure to soak them first so that they're easier to blend in the food processor.
The superfood energy balls are definitely sweet thanks to the dates, coconut, and blueberries. However they do have a hint of green powder flavor in them. So sweet, but not potently sweet.

I'm always looking for healthy snack ideas so I'll have to give these a try. I like that you try to add different superfoods by disguising their taste with the other ingredients. Great for picky eaters, like my husband!
fitasamamabear
Haha yea, I don't think anyone really wants a snack to taste like chlorella 😉 I definitely try to hide it for my daughters... I wish my hubby would even TRY them. Drives me bonkers!
Raia Todd
These sound AMAZING. Though I'd have to sub the oats for something... maybe a little almond flour? Definitely pinning for later. 🙂
fitasamamabear
Almond flour works! Any nut flour. Coconut would work too just remember it absorbs like crazy 😉 Just tweak the ration to get a texture you like, I have a feeling you may need to sub more nut flour than oats to get it to bind 🙂
Cathy
I had no idea that cacao has more calcium than cow's milk. That's a great piece of information!

I learned that a few years ago from a holistic nutritionist and was sold for life haha best knowledge bomb ever 😀

I am in LOVE with all the goodies you managed to get in there! Will definitely try these with my kiddos! Thanks!

I like to cram as much as possible into them haha
