Ingredients In The No-Bake Lactation Cookies
While there are quite a few foods that support breast milk production, these are the ones in the no-bake lactation cookies recipe:
Flaxmeal: flax is a healthy fat that naturally supports a new mom. It also contains estrogenic properties which support breastmilk production
Brewers Yeast a classic food for boosting breastmilk! Brewers yeast (different from normal yeast), contains iron, proteins, vitamin B, etc (learn more about brewers yeast).
This yeast has a mild beer-like flavor which is often covered up in lactation bites recipes with excess sugar. While these easy lactation cookies do have some sweetness to them, I tried to find a balance between unnecessary sugar and taste.
Oatmeal is another tried and true ingredient when it comes to the milk supply! High in iron and easy to mix into just about everything. Oats (as well as healthy fats) are the base of these breastfeeding cookies.
Almond flour: healthy fats are key to breastfeeding. Make sure to learn the difference between almond flour and ground almonds though.
Nut butter: cashew butter is used in these lactation energy bites but any nut butter will work! We love almond butter or almond-hazelnut too.
Honey: you don't need much sweetness so a dash of honey does the trick. I always opt to use local, raw honey to get the best benefits.
The Best Foods To Increase Milk Supply
Breastfeeding (or pumping) can be a struggle for many moms and truthfully in many different ways. However, using food to help increase milk production is a great start if you’re struggling.
On top of the foods above, herbal supplements like fenugreek and milk thistle can work wonders. I used Fenugreek with my first and it definitely helped increase my supply in the short term.
From what I’ve read, there’s a lot that goes into keeping breast milk production high:
- Lots of healthy fats
- Water intake
- Specific milk-boosting foods
It can also be affected when you're outside your comfort zone with things like travel, so these are great to have on hand (so are these baby travel essentials).

Important Teaching Tips
These lactation cookies can be stored in the fridge or the freezer in airtight containers. They do freeze solid so if stored in the freezer, let thaw before eating.
While in the fridge the cookies do firm up, at room temperature they are slightly sticky.
Any dried fruit will work in place of the cranberries. Likewise, peanut, almond, or sunbutter can replace cashew butter.
You can make this recipe into cookies or lactation bites, both work!
Frequently Asked Questions About No-Bake Lactation Bites
While the ingredients in these cookies have been shown to increase milk supply, each mom is different. Thus, what works for one may not work for another. However, while these cookies are geared towards boosting breast milk, they’re also loaded with healthy ingredients to support new moms. Healthy fats, plant-based proteins, and lots of flavors. New moms are classically ravenous. These cookies help curb hunger while being delicious!
Actually, yes! While these cookies are geared towards increasing milk supply, more is not always better. Because they’re high in fats, too much of a good thing can cause symptoms like an upset tummy or diarrhea. Most of the time this won’t be the case. However, if you didn’t eat a high-fat diet previously, all of a sudden binging on fats might be too much for your system. One to two cookies each day is plenty.
