Adding nutrient-dense snacks to your routine is one of the easiest ways to support steady energy throughout the day. These energy bites include spirulina powder, a blue-green algae considered a powerful superfood full of antioxidants, plant-based protein, and minerals that help support immune health and overall wellness. Combined with whole-food ingredients like dates and collagen, they make a quick no-bake snack when you need something energizing, similar to grabbing this dark chocolate cherry smoothie.
As a busy mom, I’ve learned that having grab-and-go energy bites (like 3-ingredient protien balls) ready in the fridge makes a huge difference when everyone gets hungry at once. These spirulina protein balls are naturally sweetened with fruit, easy to meal prep, and perfect when you need something small but energizing.

💭Why You'll Love This Recipe
No baking: Skip the time in the kitchen; these superfood energy balls require zero baking and are whipped up in minimal time.
Immune boosting: Between the collagen powder and spirulina, the bites are filled with healthy, immune-supporting nutrients.
Easy: With only 6 ingredients, you probably have everything you need to whip these up, this bounce protein ball recipe, too
Ingredients and Substitutions

- Dates: This is what naturally sweetens the spirulina coconut energy balls! A natural sugar that also has a ton of fiber. Soak your dates in warm water for 20 minutes so that they blend better. This is also the secret to omega 3 brownie bites.
- Coconut flour: This helps absorb the liquid in the balls so that they hold together.
- Collagen powder: This powder is a protein powerhouse and helps boost the immune system as well. Learn more about the difference between collagen powder and bone broth, and check out these collagen powder recipes for more ways to work it in.
- Spirulina: A great way to take in a bunch of nutrients at once, I get the greens powder from Perfect Supplements, so I get the benefit of both spirulina and chlorella.

Flavor Variations
Dried fruit: As the base of energy balls, figs work just as well as dates (I do this with date chocolate energy balls sometimes), and any dried fruit can replace the blueberries for new tastes.
Chocolate: Add 1 tablespoon of raw cacao powder to the balls for a rich chocolate flavor. This tastes best if you add a sprinkle of sea salt and a splash of maple syrup or honey.
Vegan: If you need to make the spirulina snack balls vegan-friendly, omit the collagen powder and replace it with almond flour for the same texture.
How To Make Spirulina Energy Balls

Step 1: Soak the dates and blend them until mostly smooth.

Step 2: Add all the ingredients to a bowl and mix until combined and sticky.

Step 3: Grease your hands and roll the mixture into balls, placing them into the freezer to set.
Expert Tips
Make sure to soak the dates in warm water before you need them to make it easier on your food processor and so that they come out smooth.
High-quality collagen powder and spirulina powder are important if you want the balls to be as nutrient-dense as possible. I use Perfect Supplements for this as they're such a reputable, transparent brand. Use code mamabear10 to save yourself some money if you try them.

Store the superfood energy balls in the fridge for up to 7 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months. Since dates don't freeze solid, you can actually enjoy these right out of the frozen though they obviously won't be as soft.
Spirulina Energy Balls FAQs
Dates are a natural sugar source and are normally used as the base in homemade energy balls. If you need to omit them, dried figs work in a similar way. Make sure to soak them first so that they're easier to blend in the food processor.
Spirulina energy balls are lightly sweet with a hint of green powder. It depends on the kind of dried fruit you use. If you need a sweeter taste to cover the powder, add a tablespoon of honey to the mix.
Both blue spirulina and green spirulina can be used to make energy balls. Both are packed with nutrients and great for boosting the immune system. Blue spirulina will result in a brighter-colored ball.
Spirulina powder can be potent tasting, so only use a little bit if you're not used to it. Then, give the mixture a taste and adjust from there. Start with 1 teaspoon of spirulina powder.

This is such a tasty way to get in extra nutrients! Dates make them sweet enough to hide the flavor.

I had no idea that cacao has more calcium than cow's milk. That's a great piece of information!

I learned that a few years ago from a holistic nutritionist and was sold for life haha best knowledge bomb ever 😀

These sound AMAZING. Though I'd have to sub the oats for something... maybe a little almond flour? Definitely pinning for later. 🙂

Almond flour works! Any nut flour. Coconut would work too just remember it absorbs like crazy 😉 Just tweak the ration to get a texture you like, I have a feeling you may need to sub more nut flour than oats to get it to bind 🙂

I'm always looking for healthy snack ideas so I'll have to give these a try. I like that you try to add different superfoods by disguising their taste with the other ingredients. Great for picky eaters, like my husband!

Haha yea, I don't think anyone really wants a snack to taste like chlorella 😉 I definitely try to hide it for my daughters... I wish my hubby would even TRY them. Drives me bonkers!
