Versatile: There are so many ways to adjust the flavor of this protein smoothie to make it more dessert-like or to curb a specific craving, just like with these cookie dough protein overnight oats.
Delicious taste: It tastes like a sweet cookie dough, but actually gives you a great amount of fuel. Kids and adults alike love it.
Ingredients and Substitutions

- Protein powder: I initially used a vegan protein powder for this recipe (learn more about choosing protein powders), but know that the kind you choose will affect the taste and texture of the smoothie bowl. Now, I use beef protein to make it.
- Make it paleo: You can make this cookie dough smoothie paleo-approved by using collagen powder instead of protein powder, instead but you might want to add a date or some honey to replace the sweetness. This can also be done with beef-based protein powder.
- Nut butter: Any nut butter will work for the smoothie bowl. We've been using homemade, no oil peanut butter the most for the smoothest taste.

Flavor Variations
Below are a few fun ways to adjust the cookie dough smoothie to create something new.
Protein powder: I use plain vanilla, but opting for a chocolate would be delicious too. My favorite protein powder company Equip Protein, has a cookie dough flavor that makes this smoothie a total dessert.
Toppings: Drizzle on some coconut milk caramel sauce, add some toasted pecans, and sprinkle chocolate chips if you want to make this into a dessert bowl.
Fruit base: You can use frozen mangos in place of bananas, but the smoothie bowl won’t have the same cookie dough taste.
How To Make a Cookie Dough Smoothie Bowl

Step 1: Combine the ingredients in a powdered blender.

Step 2: Blend until smooth and pour into a bowl.

Step 3: Top with the cookie dough balls and other deliciousness.
Expert Tips
Frozen bananas are one of the hacks to building thick, well balanced smoothies. If you’re using fresh bananas, the texture won’t be the same.
It's also always best to start with less liquid and only add more as needed. Instead, use a tamper with your blender. The less liquid you have, the thicker your smoothie will be. This is the premise behind chocolate banana nice cream, too.
Roll the balls of cookie dough first and pop them in the fridge or freezer while you make the smoothie.
Update: I recently made the switch from vegan to beef-based protein (learn about the benefits of beef protein powder). If you’re ready for less bloating, more energy, and a cleaner add-in, try one of my favorites below—I tested about six!
- Equip Protein: Best flavor by far (hello, cinnamon roll!), but it creates a slightly sticky texture, so it’s better for smoothies than baking. Use code mamabear to save when you try it.
- Paleo Pro: The most natural option, minimal ingredients, mixes like collagen, and works in everything. Not overly sweet, just simple and clean. Use code mamabear to save.
How To Store It
Smoothies are always best enjoyed fresh. Otherwise, they lose their texture. If you need to store it, place it in a mason jar (without the cookie dough balls) in the fridge for up to 24 hours. Either re-blend it or at least shake it before enjoying.
The cookie dough balls, though, can be made in advance and stored in the fridge or freezer to enjoy later. Store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week or the freezer for two months.
Cookie Dough Smoothie Bowl FAQs
You make smoothie bowls thick by using frozen fruit like bananas or mangos in place of fresh, and as little liquid as possible.
Any protein powder can be used to make a smoothie bowl, but it will affect the taste and texture of the smoothie. Vegan protein powders absorb more liquid, so you may need a splash extra, whereas most whey and beef proteins blend easily and you'd need less to create a thick texture.
