How To Make Homemade Ice Cream Without An Ice Cream Machine
This homemade ice cream recipe is actually "nice cream". If you haven't heard of nice cream before it's when you use frozen bananas as the base for your homemade ice cream.
Not only do the bananas provide a sweetness to the ice cream recipe but when processed frozen they create a creamy ice cream texture too.
However, because the bananas are frozen they hard. Which means you need a powerful blender.
I use a Vitamix to make homemade ice cream as it's "industry standard". I assume a good quality food processor would work too but I've never tried it that way.
Why Opt For Homemade Versus Store Bought
Store-bought ice cream is delicious, don't get me wrong! My favorite brand is the Cashew -base from So Delicious. However, many store-bought ice cream contains excessive sugar, poor quality oils, man-made flavors, and coloring which can be detrimental to our health.
When you make your own nice cream though it's:
- controlled sugar intake
- flavored with real food
- more cost-effective
It's easy to make homemade ice cream that is still loaded with processed, dairy-based ingredients.
However, since roughly sixty percent of people cannot tolerate dairy it's nice to have an alternative (here are some tips to go dairy-free if you need help!) that's simple, delicious, and cost-effective (this blackberry nice cream recipe is another favorite!)
Chocolate Peanut Butter Swirl
This homemade ice cream recipe is best when served immediately as a soft-serve ice cream.
While many people will re-freeze it, I have always found that it then gets too hard and isn't enjoyable. If you do have extra and you freeze it, you'll have to let it thaw 8-10 minutes before serving.
When blending, you will also need to use a tamper (press the mixture down while blending) as the nice cream is super thick. Adding more almond milk to it will make it more smoothie-like which isn't what we're aiming for!
This chocolate swirl ice cream is made with real-food ingredients, my favorite being cacao powder.
Cacao powder (not cocoa powder, read about the differences) is loaded with antioxidants, calcium and even iron. So really, this chocolate peanut butter nice cream recipe is healthy 😉
Fun Fact: on the days when my girls want homemade ice cream and I want them to have just a few extra nutrients, I totally slip in a bit of collagen powder to the recipe. It gives a bit more protein to the day, the flavor is undetected and it's a win for all of us.
Nice Cream Toppings
The best part about making homemade ice cream is topping it with all your favorites! There is peanut butter swirled into this homemade chocolate ice cream but a few of our other favorites are:
- caramel magic shell (or any of the other dairy-free flavors!)
- crushed peanuts
- enjoy-life chocolate chips

How To Make It
Get everything ready and chop the frozen bananas into chunks to make it easier on your blender. Place the bananas into the blender or food processor followed by the remaining ingredients (reserving one tablespoon of peanut butter) Blend until combined. If using a blender you will need to use a tamper to blend the mixture as it will be thick. If using a food processor you may need to stop and scrape down the sides. Blend until thick and combined. Use a spatula to place mixture into a large bowl. Stir in the remaining peanut butter for a swirl look. Divide into two bowls and enjoy! Makes 2 cups Note: Best eaten as soft serve right away
