Cold season hits our house hard, so I’m always looking for sneaky ways to support immune and gut health without complaints. This gut health smoothie tastes like a chocolate milkshake, so kids (and adults) happily drink it while getting a boost to their digestion and healthy gut bacteria, just like the turmeric protein shake with ginger. On the extra rough weeks, I pair it with fermented garlic and honey or my fire cider recipe for a little “mom wellness insurance.”

The secret ingredient is bone broth powder (learn why bone broth powder is the best), and no, you can’t taste it. In this gut healthy smoothie recipe, it blends right into the chocolate flavor while adding protein, minerals, and real nourishment. It’s one of the easiest ways to get something healing into everyone when energy is low and appetites are off.

    Why You'll Love This Recipe

Immune system: Bone broth is a great way to boost the immune system overall, which means recovering faster from colds and not getting as sick in the first place!

Toddler approved: With its chocolate-y flavor, this bone broth smoothie is actually a hit with kids and a great way to hide nutrients in food for toddlers.

Nourishing: The ingredients help support your digestive system, joint health, and overall well-being.

    Ingredients and Substitutions

Bone broth powder, cacao powder, frozen bananas and dates all with text labels over top.

This gut health smoothie requires few ingredients. However, there is a secret ingredient you'll need to have on hand!

    • Frozen banana: The banana helps sweeten this healthy gut smoothie, and using a frozen banana will give it a creamier texture, which is always a bigger hit with kids.
    • Cacao powder: Different than cocoa powder (learn the benefits of raw cacao powder), cacao powder is loaded with raw, immune-boosting ingredients. Use cocoa powder if you don't have this on hand.
    • Bone Broth Powder: The secret ingredient that takes this healthy gut smoothie from a regular chocolate indulgence to a powerhouse! Learn more about bone broth powder below, and then grab some from Perfect Supplements.

See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

    The Best Bone Broth Powder

Bone broth is one of the three foods I recommend every toddler have in their diet. However, having freshly made broth on hand isn't always practical.

On the other hand, bone broth powder is a quick fix with all the benefits of bone broth but none of the time commitment. Learn more about what powdered bone broth is and why you want to stock up!

Bone broth powder can be used any way the broth can (for soup and stews, to boil rice, to sip on when sick) as well as in this chocolate smoothie!

However, when choosing a powder, you really want to focus on quality. Since you are consuming the nutrients from the bones of the animal, the health of that animal matters. That's why I primarily use Perfect Supplements, try it out with code mamabear10 to save some money.

    TIME SAVING HACK
    2 Minute Bone Broth
    2 Minute Bone Broth

Reap the benefits of homemade bone broth but skip the time in the kitche. Bone broth powder gives you the best of both worlds and makes healing, homemade broth in just 2 minutes.

    Gluten-Free Bone Broth Powder

    Flavor Variations

There are a lot of ways you can vary this bone broth smoothie recipe to make it unique. Below are a few things we add in.

Superfoods: Add in other superfoods for smoothies to help bump up the gut-healthy properties of this recipe.

Toppings: If you're using this smoothie as a daily boost and not to feel better with a cold, use our favorite smoothie bowl toppings to add new flavors.

Flavors: Of course, adding coconut milk, almond butter, or avocados are great additions too, and part of building well-balanced smoothies.

Magnesium: So many of us are magnesium-deficient. I add magnesium powder when my kids need an extra boost or more sleep!

How To Make The Gut Healing Smoothie

Blender with frozen bananas, ice cubes and bone broth powder

Step 1: dd all ingredients to a high-powered blender.

Step 2: Pour the smoothie into a glass.

    Step 3: Enjoy!

    Expert Tips

Make sure to use frozen banana as that’s what makes the gut-healing smoothie creamy and ice cream-like.

The smoothie will vary in taste and texture depending on which bone broth powder powder you use. This is why I only recommend Perfect Supplements Bone Broth Powder. You can use code mamabear10 to save some money.

The other reason I specifically use Perfect Supplements Bone Broth Powder for this smoothie is that it helps make the texture of the smoothie almost fluffy. While you can use other powders (Organika is also a great brand), Perfect Supplements is the only one I’ve tried that “expands” when it’s blended. This makes the chocolate smoothie fluffy, light, and much more like a milkshake than anything else.

Its biggest perk of powdered broth that it helps heal the gut and thus boosts the immune system (similar to dairy-free probiotic foods like dill pickle sauerkraut).

    Gut Healing Smoothies FAQs

Are smoothies good for gut health?

Like any other food, it’s not the smoothie that’s healthy, it’s the ingredients. Making sure that your smoothie has quality ingredients as well as a balance of healthy fats and proteins is what will make a healthy smoothie that promotes digestive health.

Likewise, adding in some gut health superfoods will help too! This chocolate smoothie is healthy because of the bone broth powde,r which provides all the gut boost you need.

In addition, the bone broth powder doubles as a protein source to stabilize the sugar release of the bananas.

What does bone broth powder do?

Bone broth powder helps boost the immune system and improve gut health the same way homemade bone broth would. It's loaded with protein and can help improve digestive health, joint health, and ,of course your hair/skin/nails.

What can I drink to heal my gut?

Drinks like bone broth, kombucha, and kefir can all help to heal your gut as they contain pro and probiotics to support a healthy immune system.

Can I make this smoothie ahead as meal prep?

This gut healthy smoothie tastes best when freshly made. Since the bone broth powder helps to froth it up, you would lose that amazing texture if made in advance.
