Beat the heat this summer with this watermelon mint smoothie! Only six ingredients and ultra-refreshing, this smoothie is a heatwave staple.

Made with coconut water for maximum hydration, it comes out a creamy burst of flavor. Naturally dairy-free, it's a hit with kids too!

When it comes to summertime, as a Certified Nutrition Coach, this hydrating watermelon mint smoothie recipe is a must-have.

One of the common problems during the summer is not staying hydrated while enjoying time outdoors (though here are some tips to boost your water intake!). Let's be truthful, it's hot, the kids are shrieking and water just isn't making the cut.

But this creamy watermelon smoothie recipe solves that! In fact, watermelon is %92 water! Add coconut water into the mix and you have a healthy boost of electrolytes too. It's an easy way to stay cool and enjoy something fresh just like this Armenian cucumber salad or with low calorie mocktails.

You'll fall in love because it's:

    • Easy to make: only six ingredients
    • Allergy friendly: no dairy, gluten, processed sugar
    • Refreshing: kids love watermelon
    • Wonderful when pregnant: mint helps curb that first-trimester nausea (this smoothie also helps you stay cool during a summer pregnancy!)
    • A great base: also tasty with a shot of vodka (poolside, right?)

    Ingredients You Need

Watermelon: fresh or frozen watermelon will work. If using frozen watermelon, the smoothie will come out thicker but the "coolness" will last longer.

Avocado: this helps balance any sugar from the fruit and makes the watermelon smoothie creamy instead of chunky.

Coconut water: one of the best things you can drink to rehydrate! Make sure to double-check that your brand doesn't have any added sugars.

Strawberries: frozen strawberries work best to give the smoothie a creamy consistency.

Fresh mint: a little goes a long way, but fresh mint works best! Of course, you can use basil instead for a different flavor,r and if you have leftover from making dairy-free pesto sauce without pine nuts.

How To Make A Hydrating Watermelon Mint Smoothie

    1. Chop your watermelon to make it easy on your blender.
    2. Add all ingredients into a high-powered blender.
    3. Process until smooth.
    4. Divide into mason jars and top with fresh mint or lime.

    Important Teaching Tips

Make sure to double-check that your coconut water doesn't have added sugar (lots do!). I personally use Buddha coconut water or Taste Nirvana.

Mint is a natural way to boost your energy! However, it's not awesome for breastfeeding moms as it can reduce milk supply. If this is you, just omit the mint and add some lime juice.

Adding a squirt of fresh lime juice gives it a great twist!

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What fruit mixes with watermelon?

Typically bright berries mix well with watermelon (strawberries and raspberries) along with tropical fruits like pineapple and mango as well as bananas. Each one will bring a different texture and flavor to the watermelon smoothie.

    Why is fresh mint good?

Fresh mint will give the smoothie the best flavor. Mint is also wonderful for energy, clarity, and digestion making it great to sneak into your diet.

Can I freeze watermelon for smoothies?

Though fresh watermelon tastes great in smoothies, frozen watermelon brings a whole other element. It creates more of a refreshing, thick blend perfect on hot days.

I add the fats to help stabilize the sugar and stay full/fueled- it also makes it creamy so win!
