💭 Why You’ll Love This Recipe
Comforting texture: These protein Twix bars have a chewy, indulgent protein cookie base topped with sticky caramel and hardened chocolate
Dessert-like: The bars are ultra-indulgent and much more dessert-like than a traditional protein bar.
Versatile: These protein bars are just as delicious for a quick treat in the afternoon as they are served up as dessert at your next party. Mini in size and delicious, no one knows they’re healthy!
Ingredients and Substitutions

There are 3 parts to the homemade Twix bars, and though that seems overwhelming, they really come together rather quickly as there are only 9 actual ingredients.
- Gluten-free flour: I like to use Bob Red Mills 1:1 baking flour here, but all-purpose flour should work. Know that the texture of the cookie base will vary slightly depending on the flour used and how much liquid they absorb.
- Vanilla protein powder: The kind of protein you choose will alter the taste and texture of the homemade, healthy Twix bars.
- Dairy-free butter: Know that regular butter will work where you need this, and use a brand you’re comfortable with. Coconut oil can work here as well, but it won't give that classic buttery taste.
- Coconut oil: You need this in all three layers of the protein Twix bars. Measure the oil, solid, and then melt it, but make sure it’s all separated
- Peanut butter: Try to use a fresh jar of peanut butter and a natural one, as the oils in it will help it mix better into the caramel filling. We use no oil peanut butter the most.
See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.
Flavor Variations
Chocolate cookie base: In place of a vanilla base, use chocolate protein powder for a richer, chocolate taste to the bars.
Nuttier: Swap the peanut butter for almond hazelnut for a deliciously rich twist.
Toppings: Of course, topping the high-protein Twix bars with chopped nuts, coconut, or sprinkles is always fun.
How To Make The Twix Protein Bars

Step 1: In a bowl, combine the dry ingredients for the candy bar base.

Step 2: Add in the softened butter, maple syrup, and vanilla extract. Mix until a crumbly dough forms and then start adding in the coconut oil 1 tablespoon at a time.

Step 3: Add enough coconut oil to stick the dough together in one big ball.

Step 4: Press the ball of dough into a lined baking pan and bake sure it’s even and firm. Bake for 13-15 minutes until golden.

Step 5: Over low heat, mix together the coconut oil, maple syrup, and peanut butter for the caramel sauce.

Step 6: Whisk in the protein powder slowly until combined.

Step 7: Make sure the filling is smooth and pour the dairy-free caramel sauce onto the protein cookie base and smooth it out.

Step 8: Freeze for two hours and then cut them into bars, melt the chocolate and start to dip.

Step 9: Place the dipped bars back on parchment paper and into the fridge for 15 minutes to set.
Expert Tips To Make Them
The protien you choose will make a difference to the texture of the Twix bars in both the cookie base and the caramel. Here's how to choose a protien powder for the bars:
- Originally these protien bars were made with Tranformation Protein which not only blends well but is the best-tasting protein ever. With this protein you'll have the most perfect texture.
- If using a vegan protein powder, you'll need a bit of extra oil in the base as vegan protien powder tends to absorb more liquid and the crust might be a bit more crumbly.
- I've recently switched to beef isolate protein powder for health reasons and it makes these amazing too just with a stickier crust. If using Equip Protein it's a crazy delicious flavor too.
- Whey protein will also work just fine in this recipe as a 1:1 swap.
Texture: Pea protein-based powders absorb more liquid and will need more oil where as coconut blends need less. Likewise, an egg white and collagen blend will dry the cookie base out a bit. This is also the case for the caramel filling. If it’s too dry because of the powder, you’ll want to add a bit more coconut oil.
Baking tips: When you press the protein cookie base into the parchment-lined pan, press it down firmly. The better you do this, the more the base will hold together.
How To Store Them
Store the protein Twix bars in the fridge in an airtight container for up to one week. They can be enjoyed right from the fridge chilled however, I like to let mine sit at room temperature for a few minutes first. They will stay solid.
Store them in the freezer for up to 3 months. Make sure to separate them between layers of parchment paper so that they don’t stick together and rip apart.
When you need them, let them thaw in the fridge overnight before enjoying or let them sit at room temperature for 15-30 mintutes.
Twix Protein Bars FAQs
The Twix protien bars will fall apart if vegan protein powder was used and not enough coconut oil to hold it together. Likewise, if the base isn't pressed in firmly to the pan, they'll crack as you take them out. To prevent this, make sure your cookie mixture sticks together when pressed and if you're really worries, drizzle some chocolate sauce over the base to help them stick.
Yes, the protien bars taste eerily similar to a regular Twix candy bar assuming you use a sweeter protein powder. They have the same layered texture and rich flavor.
The Twix bars should remain intact at room temperature for up to an hour. The outer coating may become a bit tacky, but shouldn't melt.
