This Dairy-Free Protein Cookie Dough brings back the fun of sneaking raw cookie dough straight from the bowl, but with a healthier twist. Made in just 5 minutes, it’s an easy high-protein treat that works as a quick snack or fun dessert when cravings hit.

Remember when you were a kid, baking cookies with your mom, and always saved a little dough in the bowl to eat raw? Now you can enjoy that same treat again. This high-protein cookie dough is a healthier way to indulge, much like this viral date bark. Made with just 6 ingredients, it’s a fun snack for movie nights, afternoon cravings, or anytime you want something sweet while still fueling your body.

Recipes like this are ones I often recommend to clients who feel like they “should” have more willpower around sweets. The truth is, you don’t need to avoid cravings; you just need smarter ways to enjoy them. Just like the recipes in my Strong and Sweet Protein Guide, this cookie dough lets you indulge while still boosting your protein intake.

    Why You'll Love This Recipe

High protein: Coming in at 36 grams of protein this recipe is a sure-fire way to gain fuel.

Healthy: Made with minimal, whole-food ingredients the cookie dough is naturally dairy-free, gluten-free, and paleo-approved.

Easy: The recipe is made in just 5 minutes so it's a quick way to curb a craving without the sugar crash.

Plus, there's no traditional vanilla protein powder needed to make it!

    Ingredients and Substitutions

Multiple ingredients in measuring cups with text labels over top.

The ingredients for protein cookie dough are pretty simple, and you’ll probably already have them on hand if you have a well-stocked gluten-free pantry.

    • Collagen: Used in place of protein powder for this cookie dough recipe (and these healthy cookie dough bars). Collagen is the cleanest source of protein, and it blends well (no chalky texture!).
    • Natural peanut butter: Use natural peanut butter that is semi-fresh (the hard stuff on the bottom of the jar won’t work!). Natural peanut butter (like this no oil peanut butter blends into the ingredients better just like into these chocolate chip protein cookie.
    • Almond flour: This is the bulk of the protein cookie dough recipe. Almond flour gives the protein cookie dough recipe a "baked goods" feel. Learn the difference between almond flour and ground almonds and then choose whichever one works for you.
    • Dairy-free butter: Any non-dairy butter will work for edible cookie dough. For anyone who tolerates goat's butter, that works too. Coconut oil can be used, but it won't have that classic cookie-dough taste.

    Flavor Variations

Almond hazelnut: This is my kids' favorite. Replace the peanut butter with almond hazelnut butter for a super-rich taste.

Mix-ins: Adding sprinkles, candy canes, or even mini marshmallows can be a super fun twist. This is especially fun around holidays.

Chocolate cookie dough: You can't go wrong with a chocolate peanut butter taste. Add 1 tablespoon of raw cacao powder to the mix.

How To Make Dairy-Free Protein Cookie Dough

    1. Heat the butter so that it is just melted.
    2. Mix all the ingredients in a bowl except the chocolate chips.
    3. Stir in the chocolate chips.
    4. Enjoy.

    Important Teaching Tips

Having a high-quality collagen powder is important so that the cookie dough tastes good (and not gritty). I use Perfect Supplements for this as they're super transparent about their products. If you try it, code mamabear10 saves you money. Learn more about what collagen powder is.

Both whey protein and beef isolate protein could be used in place of collagen powder (which would also bring new flavors). With whey protein, it will be pretty interhcangeable but with the beef protein, you may need butter to get the texture right.

Adjust the texture with maple syrup and dairy-free butter as to your own personal preference. Add them slowly and only add as much as needed to make it sticky but not thick.

Know that you can use tallow in place of dairy-free butter as well, or even types of coconut milk for a rich flavor.

Storing: This dairy-free cookie dough is best eaten as soon as you make it. Though it can sit on the counter for a bit. Placing it in the fridge causes it to become too hard. Portion it into bowls as soon as you make it and enjoy!

    Dairy-Free Protein Cookie Dough FAQs

Can you store edible cookie dough?

Storing the protein cookie dough causes it to become hard and crumbly. The cookie dough is best eaten freshly made.

Can you bake the protein cookie dough?

Though you may be able to bake the cookie dough, it doesn’t really have anything in it to make cookies rise or hold together, and is best eaten raw.

Can I use vanilla protein powder in place of collagen?

Some protein powder brands will work in place of collagen powder for edible cookie dough. Vegan protein powder tends to absorb more liquid, though, which would dry out the cookie dough. You may have to add a splash of almond milk to make it work.

Used almond butter for a twist and it's so good. This is so easy to make, and the peanut butter-chocolate chip combo is a classic winner.

I would never think of using collagen powder in something like this, but it's such a good way to add this to some recipes. This cookie dough is like a guilty pleasure. I love it and I love it's so easy to make.
