A vibrant twist on a classic dip. This green chickpea hummus is packed with zesty, garlic flavor. Made in just a few minutes this vegan hummus recipe makes the perfect veggie dip or the base of any wrap.

Green chickpea hummus in a glass bowl with parsley on top and carrots, red pepper and celery around it.

Most recipes use green chickpeas for their color. Green chickpeas are just chickpeas that have been harvested earlier than the traditional ones we're used to.

This recipe though uses veggies to get its color.

A great way to sneak some of that extra kale in your fridge into your diet! This green chickpea hummus is deliciously snackable and full of fiber.

It's made in just five minutes making it the perfect throw-together snack and works on everything from sandwiches to bowls.

If you're looking to add a bit more freshness to your diet, this easy hummus recipe is for you!

I personally love that it's an easy way to sneak more veggies into your diet (learn how to prep kale so you'll actually eat it).

    Ingredients You Need

Tahini: sesame seed paste gives a unique flavor to the hummus while also helping give it a silky texture just like in this roasted carrot hummus.

Lemon juice: this will help give a zesty flavor to the hummus recipe and keep it fresh longer.

Garlic: freshly minced garlic will have the best flavor but garlic powder would work too.

Seasonings: you'll need some cumin, sea salt, onion powder, and chives.

Chickpeas: make sure the chickpeas are either from a can (rinsed) or cooked fully.

Kale: this is what amps up the nutrients in the hummus.

Olive oil: any neutral oil will work here but we use extra virgin olive oil the most.

    How To Make It

    1. In a powerful blender, add the garlic, lemon juice, olive oil, onion powder, cumin, and salt.
    2. Blend until combined.
    3. Add in the kale, chives, and chickpeas.
    4. Begin to blend on low. Use a tamper as needed.
    5. Add the water to help blend completely.
    6. Blend until everything is combined.

    Important Teaching Tips

This green hummus is thick. If you want to thin or smooth it out, add a tablespoon more of oil.

The recipe uses regular garbanzo beans (chickpeas) and gets its color from the kale. If you have access to green chickpeas though, use them!

Though this recipe uses kale, there's nothing to say you can't switch up the greens. Spinach, basil, or fresh parsley work too.

However, because kale is so dense, switching the veggie may change the texture a bit too.

You can store the green goddess hummus in an airtight container for about a week.

Both canned or fresh chickpeas will work for the hummus. However, if using raw, make sure to soak and cook them fully first.

The recipe makes a pretty big batch (1.5 cups).

What To Use Green Hummus For

Though fresh green chickpea hummus is commonly known as a veggie dip, you can use it for just about anything.

A few of our favorites are:

    • the base in a healthy vegetable wrap
    • on top of a plant-based Buddha Bowl in place of dressing
    • the spread on a tasty, crunchy, sprout & veggie sandwich

Considering this, don't limit the hummus to only dipping (same goes for this tasty dill aioli!). Get creative and enjoy its zesty flavor!

This hummus works so well as a game day app especially served with something like easy bacon wrapped air fryer jalapenos.

Fast, crave-worthy snacks that hit your protein goals (without tracking or extra cooking time).

Frequently Asked Questions About Green Chickpea Hummus

Why is lemon juice in hummus?

Not only does lemon add a burst of zesty flavor but it also acts as a natural preservative to keep the hummus fresh longer.

What is green hummus made of?

Green hummus can use a base of regular or green chickpeas. It normally gets its color though from adding in fresh vegetables and herbs like cilantro, kale, or parsley.

The texture was perfect, thick and creamy just like I love my hummus. My partner and I enjoyed it as a spread to veggie sandwich and it was so delicious. I'll never go back to store-bought again!

This hummus recipe is one of my favorites among the many that I've tried. It is so creamy, smooth with just the right amount of thickness. Even my kids, who are usually picky about veggies enjoyed it. So good!
