This homemade nut-free granola has become a staple in our house because it works for everything: a healthy snack, a cereal swap in the morning, or grab-and-go fuel straight from the fridge when the day gets chaotic. I often sprinkle it (or my go-to protein granola) over blueberry protein oatmeal or mix it into a dairy-free yogurt parfait, and my kids will happily eat it by the handful (which is a win in my books).
Even though this granola without nuts is made entirely from seeds, it bakes up soft, turns crisp as it cools, and tastes surprisingly indulgent thanks to the honey-sweetened finish. That subtle caramelised crunch makes it just as crave-worthy as my granola clusters, but completely school-safe. It’s one of those easy recipes that makes you feel a little more put together, even on the most rushed mornings.

Ingredients and Substitutions

- Pumpkin & sunflower seeds: Make sure to use unsalted seeds that haven’t been roasted already. These are interchangeable, too, so if you only have one or the other, that's okay.
- Sunbutter: This is what replaces nut butter in this nut-free granola recipe. It’s not as sweet but leaves the granola with a hearty feel.
- Honey: I use creamed honey as that's what we have in the cupboard. But regular, local honey is fine. Though maple syrup can work, it will also affect the cooking time.
See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.
Flavor Variations
Dried fruit: Any dried fruit will work for the homemade nut-free granola. We use dried cranberries and apricots the most, but dried cherries and blueberries are tasty too.
Chocolate chip: No kid will say no to a bite of gooey chocolate. Add mini, dairy-free chocolate chips to the batter for extra indulgence.
Warmth: Mixing vanilla extract or cinnamon into the granola adds another level of comforting flavor.
Expert Tips To Make It
When you stir the no-nut granola halfway through, make sure to re-flatten it so that it cooks evenly.
The granola is not fully cooked when you pull it out of the oven. It will still be really crumbly and won’t hold together at all. Let it cool fully before moving it off the tray.
Store the granola in airtight containers (we do large-mouth mason jars) in the fridge for up to 3 weeks.
How To Use It
Below are a few ways to use the granola recipe that we've tried and rotate through.
- As a smoothie topper (it's one of the best toppings for smoothie bowls).
- On top of cookie dough overnight oats.
- As a cereal with some homemade hemp milk.
- On top of chocolate collagen pudding.
- In a snack on its own with some fruit
Gluten-Free Nut-Free Granola FAQs
On the counter in a sealed container, gluten-free granola will last 5-7 days. In the fridge, clusters will last 2-3 weeks in a sealed container.
The stickier your granola mixture is from nut butter and sweetener, the better the granola will hold together. The sugar in the honey hardens once it’s cooked, and that holds the clusters together. Because there isn’t much honey used in this recipe, the granola will be more like cereal and not as much in “clusters”.
Yes, you can freeze homemade granola. Let it cool fully before placing it in a freezer-safe bag and into the freezer. It will stay fresh for roughly 3 months. Let it come to room temperature when you need it. It will still be delicious but may lose some of it's natural crunch.
