💭Why You'll Love The Recipe
Flavorful: The combination of refreshing mint with the comfort of chocolate sauce is a wonderful taste.
Healthy: With 22 grams of protein and naturally dairy-free and paleo, this mint protein smoothie is a healthy snack choice.
Versatile: With a few swaps or additions, you can easily change this smoothie into something new!
Ingredients and Substitutions
The mint chocolate smoothie gets its green color from a blend of fresh spinach, mint, and avocado. However, it has a few more ingredients to help take it up from a plain green smoothie to an awesome one.
- Frozen Banana: Frozen banana is one of the items that make smoothies creamy (learn more about how to build the BEST smoothie). And though fresh is awesome and will work, frozen banana gives the mint chocolate smoothie more of an ice cream-like consistency.
- Almond Butter: Any nut butter will work, but almond butter tends to not affect the indulgent flavor of the smoothie.
- Maple Syrup: Honey can be used instead, but you do need the added hint of sweetness.
- Almond milk: Opt for unsweetened almond milk as you don't needed the added sugar with the chocolate syrup! Keep in mind that homemade almond milk or creamy, dreamy hemp milk work just as well.
- Collagen powder: The cleanest source of protein, collagen powder is something I use daily to bump up my intake.

Topping The Smoothie
In general, my personal preference is a drizzle of chocolate sauce along with mini chocolate chips.
However, adding on some homemade coconut whip cream is blissful too as are any of these smoothie bowl toppings!
And if you're using this mint chocolate smoothie to celebrate Saint Patricks Day, it does taste rather delicious with a shot of Kahlua as well 😉. This Luck of the Irish Cocktail is a fun one for that too … for moms only of course. Or, you can rock a low calorie mocktail to celebrate too.
Frequently Asked Questions
Any liquid can be used in the mint chocolate recipe (milk, water, coconut water, plant-based milk, juice, etc). If you want to keep your chocolate mint smoothie lower in calories, opt for water or coconut water. If you want to make your smoothie extra creamy, plant-based milk is a great option.
Since your body does still need fuel, any smoothie that replaces a meal should be low in processed sugar and higher in protein to help keep you full. This mint protein smoothie can be a replacement as it's a good blend of maconutrients.
Herbs are a great way to flavor smoothies and improve your digestion. You can experiment using any fresh herbs that you like so long as you start small. Most people enjoy mint or basil in small amounts. So, a mint chocolate smoothie containing those herbs is a great place to begin.
