Thick, creamy, and made with fresh ingredients, this mint chocolate protein smoothie can be breakfast or dessert! Packed with protein and based on the popular Shamrock shake, this dairy-free smoothie recipe uses real mint and is swirled with homemade chocolate sauce to give you the best of both worlds.

Green mint smoothie topped with fresh mint and chocolate chips with two blue straws and a hand holding the glass

This mint chocolate protein smoothie is the perfect blend of a healthy snack and an indulgent dessert, kinda like peanut butter protein bark. Made with real mint for a burst of energy, the smoothie is also swirled with chocolate sauce for maximum indulgence.

As a Certified Nutrition Coach, I love that this mint chocolate smoothie gives you all the nutrients of a traditional green shake with all the sweetness of a chocolate treat.

Plus, you'll be taking in 22 grams of protein and a lot of energy! Learn more about the benefits of a high protein diet and why you want to amp it up, and check out these energizing smoothie recipes to help you.

    Why You'll Love The Recipe

Flavorful: The combination of refreshing mint with the comfort of chocolate sauce is a wonderful taste.

Healthy: With 22 grams of protein and naturally dairy-free and paleo, this mint protein smoothie is a healthy snack choice.

Versatile: With a few swaps or additions, you can easily change this smoothie into something new!

    Ingredients You Need

The mint chocolate smoothie gets its green color from a blend of fresh spinach, mint, and avocado. However, it has a few more ingredients to help take it up from a plain green smoothie to an awesome one.

Frozen Banana: Frozen banana is one of the items that make smoothies creamy (learn more about how to build the BEST smoothie). And though fresh is awesome and will work, frozen banana gives the mint chocolate smoothie more of an ice cream-like consistency.

Almond Butter: Any nut butter will work, but almond butter tends to not affect the indulgent flavor of the smoothie.

Maple Syrup: Honey can be used instead, but you do need the added hint of sweetness.

Almond milk: Opt for unsweetened almond milk as you don't needed the added sugar with the chocolate syrup! Keep in mind that homemade almond milk or creamy, dreamy hemp milk work just as well.

Collagen powder: The cleanest source of protein, collagen powder is something I use daily to bump up my intake.

    Topping The Smoothie

In general, my personal preference is a drizzle of chocolate sauce along with mini chocolate chips.

However, adding on some homemade coconut whip cream is blissful too as are any of these smoothie bowl toppings!

And if you're using this mint chocolate smoothie to celebrate Saint Patricks Day, it does taste rather delicious with a shot of Kahlua as well 😉. This Luck of the Irish Cocktail is a fun one for that too … for moms only of course. Or, you can rock a low calorie mocktail to celebrate too.

How To Make The Mint Chocolate Protein Smoothie

Step 1: Whisk up the ingredients for the chocolate sauce until no clumps remain. Set aside.

Step 2: Place all ingredients for the smoothie (except the chocolate chips) into a powerful blender and blend until smooth and creamy.

Step 3: Place ¼ of the chocolate sauce into each glass and swirl it around. Divide the mint chocolate smoothie into the glasses.

Step 4: Top the protein smoothies with the remaining chocolate sauce and chocolate chips.

    Choosing Collagen Powder

It’s no surprise that this protein smoothie is made with collagen powder!

All the protein without the bloat.

I use collagen powder for amping up protein and boosting gut health.

Learn about the difference between collagen and bone broth as how to increase protein intake.

Honestly, as a busy mom collagen powder just makes it easy to eat more protein and not feel like I’m living off chicken and eggs.

And more protein means more energy, more natural beauty, and feeling your BEST.

I grab my collagen from Perfect Supplements because they source their collagen from pasture-raised (grass-fed) cows. So, I trust it.Grab some collagen powder and use code mamabear10 to save some money.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the healthiest liquid to put in a smoothie?

Any liquid can be used in the mint chocolate recipe (milk, water, coconut water, plant-based milk, juice, etc). If you want to keep your chocolate mint smoothie lower in calories, opt for water or coconut water. If you want to make your smoothie extra creamy, plant-based milk is a great option.

Is the mint chocolate smoothie a good meal replacement?

Since your body does still need fuel, any smoothie that replaces a meal should be low in processed sugar and higher in protein to help keep you full. This mint protein smoothie can be a replacement as it's a good blend of maconutrients.

Can you put herbs in smoothies?

Herbs are a great way to flavor smoothies and improve your digestion. You can experiment using any fresh herbs that you like so long as you start small. Most people enjoy mint or basil in small amounts. So, a mint chocolate smoothie containing those herbs is a great place to begin.

    • ¼ avocado
    • ½ cup mint fresh
    • ¼ teaspoon peppermint extract
    • 1 tbs maple syrup
    • 3-4 ice cubes

    • ½ cup water

    Notes

    • Toppings for the smoothie are not included but protein granola or coconut whip cream are pretty tasty!

    • Coconut milk from a can is a great addition to the top of the smoothie.
