Need to step up your game on busy mornings? If you’re craving more energy, longer-lasting fuel, and a breakfast that doesn’t require thinking, this banana matcha smoothie has your back (though a coconut milk matcha latte is a close second). It’s fast, filling, and gives you that calm-but-focused matcha buzz that moms dream about.

This matcha collagen smoothie is also the perfect way to use up extra bananas while packing in serious protein to keep you full. If you’re curious why protein matters so much, you can learn more about the benefits of a high protein diet. It’s a creamy, slightly tart blend of everything your morning needs, just like cinnamon roll blended overnight oats.

    💭Why You'll Love This Recipe

Quick to make: This matcha collagen smoothie is ready in just 5 minutes.

Healthy: The smoothie is dairy-free, gluten-free, paleo-friendly, and packed with protein to make it a healthy, fueling breakfast.

Delicious: It's sweet but tart and both creamy and refreshing, the perfect pick-me-up.

Energizing: Thanks to the natural perks of matcha powder, this smoothie recipe packs a ton of energy just like these coffee protein balls

    Ingredients and Substitutions

Mulitple ingredients like avocado, collagen powder matcha powder, and banana in measuring cups with text labels over top.
    • Banana: For once, it doesn’t matter if you use frozen bananas or not, this banana matcha smoothie will come out creamy either way. And the riper your banana is, the sweeter the smoothie will be! Use any extras to make single serve protein banana bread.
    • Avocado: Make sure the avocado is also ripe; otherwise, it'll end up in little chunks and not smooth. This is a hack when making well-balanced smoothie recipes.
    • Coconut milk: Use the coconut milk from a can and not anything pre-mixed for the best results.
    • Collagen powder: There’s nothing like a protein boost to kick off your morning, and collagen powder is the cleanest protein you can choose (learn more about collagen powder).
    • Matcha powder: Now, any matcha will technically work, however, Four Sigmatics matcha has a unique twist to SUPERCHARGE your energy and focus (learn more below).

See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

    Flavor Variations

Citrus: Add a citrus twist to the banana matcha smoothie by blending some orange or lemon zest in.

Toppings: Of course, you can make the protein smoothie more indulgent by making it into a smoothie bowl and using these smoothie bowl toppings to customize the taste.

Mango matcha: Mangos blend similarly to bananas, and so they'll still create a rich texture while giving a tropical twist to the recipe.

How To Make The Banana Matcha Smoothie

Matcha powder being added to a mini food processor with collagen powder in it.

Step 1: Combine all the ingredients into a high-powered blender with the milk on the bottom.

    Step 2: Blend until smooth.

Matcha green smoothie being poured into a glass.

Step 3: Pour into a mason jar.

Lime zest being grated over a glass with a green smoothie in it.

Step 4: Top with extra zest or coconut whipped cream and enjoy!

    Expert Tips

When I use this matcha protein shake in the morning, I like to add some lime zest to it to really wake me up. But this is totally optional! This copycat Starbucks matcha latte is always a fun pick-me-up, too.

Frozen banana will work for the smoothie and will make it refreshing and thicker. However, the banana on your counter works as well.

If you want a more indulgent feel, add in half a teaspoon of vanilla extract.

Oat milk, almond milk, or hemp milk all work as the liquid base in the banana matcha smoothie.

    Choosing Matcha Powder

The kind of matcha powder you choose matters (learn more about the benefits of matcha). This is why I opt for Four Sigmatics Matcha Powder because not only does it contain the base energy from the matcha green tea but it also has a hint of lion's mane!

Lion's mane is technically a type of mushroom but its biggest perk is that it gives you almost instant focus and even more energy than the normal coffee or matcha hit.

This is why I like to use this matcha banana smoothie as a breakfast replacement. All the ease of a smoothie and all the energy of lions mane!

    Matcha Banana Smoothie FAQs

Can you make this banana matcha smoothie ahead of time?

Though the matcha banana smoothie tastes best freshly made, it can definitely be made in advance. Just store it in an airtight mason jar and make sure to give it a good shake before consuming. The shake will be a little less thick if made ahead of time, but still delicious.

Does matcha powder taste good with bananas?

The reason that matcha is commonly paired with bananas is that, on its own it’s not very sweet. The bananas in the smoothie help give it a more palatable flavor while still reaping the energy and antioxidant benefits.

Can this banana matcha smoothie be a healthy breakfast?

Because the matcha smoothie is loaded with protein as well as energy, it makes for a great addition or replacement of a healthy breakfast.

I honestly keep ice cubes and mashed up/sealed avocado in my freezer just so I can make this whenever the craving strikes (which is often!). It's been a great help in my transition away from a bad coffee habit.

I swapped out the coconut milk for oat milk and it worked perfectly! Still creamy and delicious, but with a slightly different flavor profile. Love that this recipe is so customizable.
