If plain popcorn has you bored but you still want something crunchy that adds a little extra protein, this recipe is for you. It’s sweet, salty, and chocolatey, and it comes together with just a few pantry staples.
I make my popcorn on the stovetop (just like my healthy caramel popcorn without corn syrup), but any popcorn (store-bought or not) you have on hand works. Basically, this recipe is your reminder that snacking is okay and protein doesn't have to suck. Seriously, try my protein blondies to really nail this in.

💭Why You'll Love This Recipe
It comes together quickly. Once the popcorn is popped, the coating takes only a few minutes in one bowl.
It’s sweet and salty. A little cane sugar and salt give it a kettle-corn feel without going full candy.
It has a dessert-style sibling. When you want something more indulgent, the chocolate-covered version is coated in melted chocolate and set in the fridge.
Ingredients and Substitutions

- Cooked popcorn: Any will work, but I prefer to make mine from scratch on the stove in a cast iron pan.
- Protein powder: I use Equip Protein for this popcorn recipe because it's a high-quality powder that gives zero bloat and actually tastes good. Learn more about why I switched to beef isolate protein powder after using vegan powders for a decade. That said, any protein should work; just make sure you like the taste of it.
- Seasonings: This is where it can get fun with flavors. I kept it simple with cane sugar, salt, and cinnamon, but a pinch of cayenne for a sweet and spicy could be fun too.

How To Make It A Dessert
For this easy protein popcorn, I kept it dry and simple. But you can also make a chocolate-coated, almost candied protein popcorn. To do this, you need:
- 4 cups cooked popcorn
- ⅛ cup chocolate chips
- ⅛ cup chocolate protein powder
- ½ tablespoon coconut oil
- ½ teaspoon salt
Melt the chocolate and coconut oil together, then stir in the protein powder and salt until smooth. Drizzle it over the popcorn, tossing halfway through. Then pop it in the fridge for about thirty minutes to set.
This is a crazy delicious, super indulgent protein popcorn flavor. However, make sure to use a protein that blends easily. Vegan proteins won't work, as they'll thicken the chocolate too much.

How To Make High-Protein Popcorn

Step 1: Pop your popcorn if you're making your own and melt the coconut oil. Then, drizzle the coconut oil over the popcorn in batches.

Step 2: Combine the protein powder and remaining ingredients in a small bowl. Sprinkle half of it over the popcorn. Pause to toss the popcorn and repeat with the remaining.

Step 3: Portion it into bowls and try to enjoy it without your kids sneaking some!
Expert Tips To Make It
- Add the protein mixture in two batches. Toss between additions so the coating spreads instead of settling at the bottom of the bowl.
- Choose a chocolate protein powder you enjoy. Its flavor leads this recipe, so pick one you’d happily eat on its own. This is exactly why I use Equip Protein (code mamabear saves you money).
- Don’t skip the coconut oil. Coconut oil is how the protein and seasonings stick to the popcorn; don't skip it.
- Pick your version on purpose. The dry version is an everyday snack, and the chocolate-covered version is for when you want dessert.
- Serving: The chocolate-coated version must be stored in the fridge so that it doesn't melt. The dry version can be stored in a covered bowl on the counter for 3-4 days.
High-Protein Popcorn FAQs
Use a protein powder you actually enjoy, because its flavor is the main event in this recipe. Likewise, if making the chocolate-coated version, use a protein that blends well (not vegan protein), or the mixture is too thick and won't drizzle.
Of course. Choosing protein powder flavors like salted caramel or cookies and cream is a great way to change it up.
