Naturally sweet, this homemade watermelon slushie can be enjoyed as-is or spiked for the adults. On hot summer days when I’m chasing kids around the backyard, this healthy watermelon slushie is a great way to stay hydrated since watermelon is about 92% water. And when we want to switch things up, this frozen protein yogurt is just as refreshing.

What I love most about this healthy slushie is that it's just 3 ingredients, a quick blend, and you’ve got a thick, icy treat in under 5 minutes (using frozen watermelon helps keep it from getting watery!). It’s become one of our go-to summer drinks right alongsidea salted caramel protein shake paired with frozen chocolate-covered bananas.

    💭Why You'll Love This Recipe

Refreshing: This homemade watermelon slushie recipe is naturally sweetened with just fruit and super refreshing because of it.

Hydrating: Since watermelon is over 90% water, this slushie an easy way to stay hydrated on hot days.

Kid-approved: It's pink, fizzy, and cool, so both kids and adults love it.

    Ingredients and Substitutions

Watermelon and strawberries in bowls with a can of Perrier behind them and text labels over everything.
    • Watermelon: Frozen watermelon chunks work best for the slushie recipe, as it makes a thicker, icier texture. However, fresh watermelon can work in a pinch.
    • Perrier: The easiest way to make something "fancy" is to add a bit of fizz! This is my staple when it comes to healthy mocktails, too. While you can use flavored Perrier, the original works just fine.
    • Lime Juice: totally optional, but a great addition! Lime juice gives a burst of flavor and energy. You can either use the lime juice right in the watermelon slushie or use wedges as a garnish.

See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

    Flavor Variations

Tropical: Add a splash of fresh lime juice! Lime juice gives a burst of flavor and energy. You can either use the lime juice right in the watermelon slushie or use wedges as a garnish.

Hydrating: If you really want to make this healthy watermelon slushie hydrating, add coconut water to the mix. Coconut water has an amazing balance of electrolytes and is perfect in the summer.

Cocktail: Adults only, of course, but this slushie recipe is delicious with 2 ounces of your favorite vodka. You'll want to add 5 more strawberries or 3 more ice cubes to keep the texture, though. And of course, if you need some inspiration for more summer alcohol drinks, check out this pineapple slush and these easy vodka cocktails!

How To Make A Watermelon Slushie

Frozen watermelon slushie being poured into a clear glass

Step 1: Add the watermelon, strawberries, and ice cubes to a high-powered blender. Process until combined.

Step 2: Pour into glasses and add in Perrier water.

Step 3: Garnish with a lime (or lime juice), or fresh mint, and serve.

    Expert Tips

Frozen watermelon creates a thicker watermelon slushie. If using fresh watermelon, you'll definitely want to use frozen strawberries to help balance it out.

For the best texture, serve the non-alcoholic watermelon slushie immediately. Storing it in the fridge causes the slushie to lose its refreshing texture and thin out.

    Watermelon Slushie FAQs

How do I keep my slushie from getting watery?

To keep your slushy from getting watery, make sure to first allow any excess water drip from the watermelon before freezing. Use frozen fruit to maximize the chill in the slushy, and do not add water while blending. Once frozen and blended, keep your slushy in a cool place, as it will thin out as it melts.

Do I need to use frozen watermelon to make a slushy?

Frozen watermelon works best when making slushies. If you don't have frozen watermelon, use a frozen fruit in the slushy and ice as needed until you get the right texture.

Can I make my slushy into popsicles?

You can make leftover slushy into popsicles, but know that because they're so high in water, they come out a bit icy and not creamy.

    Equipment

    • High powered blender

    Ingredients

    • 3 cups chopped watermelon seeds removed
    • 7 strawberries
    • 5 ice cubes
    • 1 can Perrier original

    Instructions

    • Place the watermelon, strawberries and ice cubes into a powerful blender.
    • Blend until combined.
    • Pour the mixture into two glasses and top with the Perrier. Once the Perrier hits it will start to fizz.
    • Enjoy immediately.

    Notes

    • Place the watermelon on the bottom (instead of the ice) to make it easier
    • Frozen watermelon works best, but if you don't have it, no problem, try to use frozen strawberries then, or just add ice as needed to reach your texture.
    • You can garnish the watermelon slush with a slice of lime or fresh mint.

I found this after trying to figure out what to do with some cubed watermelon that was about to kick the bucket. I threw it in the freezer and made this the next day. Honestly, I wasn't expecting much, but whoa, was I blown away! It was seriously so good, and I am buying a watermelon just so I can cube and freeze it to make this! lol Thanks for sharing!
