- Light: thanks to the yogurt the cake is light but indulgent
Ingredients You'll Need
Most of the ingredients you'll have on hand (which is awesome!) but there are a few swaps. Unlike the traditional version, this recipe doesn't use any sour cream, vanilla, or brown sugar!
And to keep you on your toes, it doesn't use a bundt pan either!
Whole Wheat Flour: If you need to make this recipe gluten-free see the notes in the recipe card!
Oat flour: either pre-bought or you can grind them yourself for extra texture.
Baking powder: the yogurt and baking powder are what help this dairy-free coffee cake rise to be fluffy.
Baking soda: helps give the yogurt a light texture when mixed with yogurt.
Plain yogurt: most people use Greek yogurt for coffee cakes and that can definitely work (like in this 3 ingredient yogurt cake). For this dairy-free version though, coconut yogurt works best.
Banana: to keep the sugar down, mashed bananas is used to both sweeten the cake as well as give it its awesome texture.
Maple syrup: keeping the Canadian in the recipe with a hint of maple syrup. Make sure it's the real thing as it makes the flavor better. Just like in this maple latte.
Coconut palm sugar: this is what's used to keep this recipe dessert-like in place of brown sugar. Thanks to the banana though not much is needed!
Coffee: the choice is up to you! Adding ground coffee to the cake gives it an extra rich feel.

Important Teaching Tips
The brand of yogurt you choose will affect both the texture and the flavor of the dairy-free cake.
To date, coconut yogurt has been used. You can of course use a traditional yogurt for this coffee cake recipe, just not Greek yogurt as it’ll change the texture because of its thick consistency.
Likewise, the brand and flavor of coffee you choose will alter the taste.
You can use light brown sugar to replace the coconut palm sugar if that's your thing.
The cake is sweet but not too sweet.
