This healthy dessert is sprinkled with a hint of cane sugar to make it that much more indulgent.

One square of dairy-free coffee cake in front of a ramekin of coffee beans with more coffee cake squares lined up behind it and a light orange linen around them this …

A staple at any shower, coffee cake is normally a broad term for "cake served with coffee".

But there's an exception with this yogurt coffee cake recipe... it contains actual coffee!

Not only is it easy to make but it's a great pick me up too. Sweetened with coconut palm sugar, this dairy-free coffee cake is a little bit of comfort at a gathering, just like this pumpkin protein bread.

Fall in love with the classic flavor and the soft texture of this dairy-free coffee cake and have the recipe on hand for any showers coming up!

You'll love it because:

  • Easy to make (minimal ingredients)
  • Allergy-friendly (dairy-free and vegan)
  • Classic (everyone loves a nutmeg, sugary cake)
  • Light: thanks to the yogurt the cake is light but indulgent

Ingredients You'll Need

Most of the ingredients you'll have on hand (which is awesome!) but there are a few swaps. Unlike the traditional version, this recipe doesn't use any sour cream, vanilla, or brown sugar!

And to keep you on your toes, it doesn't use a bundt pan either!

Whole Wheat Flour: If you need to make this recipe gluten-free see the notes in the recipe card!

Oat flour: either pre-bought or you can grind them yourself for extra texture.

Baking powder: the yogurt and baking powder are what help this dairy-free coffee cake rise to be fluffy.

Baking soda: helps give the yogurt a light texture when mixed with yogurt.

Plain yogurt: most people use Greek yogurt for coffee cakes and that can definitely work (like in this 3 ingredient yogurt cake). For this dairy-free version though, coconut yogurt works best.

Banana: to keep the sugar down, mashed bananas is used to both sweeten the cake as well as give it its awesome texture.

Maple syrup: keeping the Canadian in the recipe with a hint of maple syrup. Make sure it's the real thing as it makes the flavor better. Just like in this maple latte.

Coconut palm sugar: this is what's used to keep this recipe dessert-like in place of brown sugar. Thanks to the banana though not much is needed!

Coffee: the choice is up to you! Adding ground coffee to the cake gives it an extra rich feel.

How To Make Yogurt Coffee Cake

  3. Spray an 8×4 pan and pour the batter in.
  4. Combine the topping ingredients. Sprinkle the mixture over the top of the coffee cake.
  5. Bake for 30 minutes.
  6. Remove from the oven and let cool in pan.

Important Teaching Tips

The brand of yogurt you choose will affect both the texture and the flavor of the dairy-free cake.

To date, coconut yogurt has been used. You can of course use a traditional yogurt for this coffee cake recipe, just not Greek yogurt as it’ll change the texture because of its thick consistency.

Likewise, the brand and flavor of coffee you choose will alter the taste.

You can use light brown sugar to replace the coconut palm sugar if that's your thing.

The cake is sweet but not too sweet.

Are You Coffee Obsessed?

All cake aside, as a mom, I totally live off coffee. Like I NEED that cup in the morning. And sometimes… I need another. This is where Four Sigmatic's Coffee comes in.

Mamas, if you need some extra energy check out the Chaga & Lions Mane blend, it’s become a staple for me and I find it gives me a mini energy jolt and focus boost when I need to get it all done.

Frequently Asked Questions About Yogurt Coffee Cake

What does adding yogurt do to a cake?

Adding yogurt to a cake (or pancakes) helps keep the cake moist and the texture a bit fluffier.

How do you store yogurt coffee cake?

Because the dairy-free coffee cake is yogurt-based, it should be stored in an air-tight container in the fridge. The cake will thicken up a bit once stored.

Makes 8 large squares or 9-10 slices.
Depending on your coconut yogurt you may need to adjust the cooking length. Use the old trick of sticking a toothpick in it and making sure it comes out clean!
