All-natural, DIY sleepy time bath bombs with essential oils make a great homemade gift (just like these sugar scrubs). This particular easy DIY bath bomb recipe is even more special- they're sleep-inducing (followed up by this baby body butter recipe).

Thus, they make the perfect addition to your night-time relaxation routine or a thoughtful self-care gift to friends and family!

It's not often I get to take a bath with two littles. Actually, more often than not, if I do get to take one a toddler keeps coming in and trying to "help" me 😛

Though, when I do find the time, it is nice to relax with some DIY bath bombs for sleep! Even watching them fizz is relaxing! And, like most things in my house, homemade is best.

However, DIY bath bombs eluded me for a really like time. I actually failed miserably at them and it took me forever to get a system down!

You can read more about my attempts (and fails!) in my blog post: How & Why To Make Your Own Bath Bombs.

One of the reasons I like DIY bath bombs is because they're now only amazing for your own pampering routine but they also make great homemade gifts! Likewise, you can change up the color, scents, and molds to create and customize new bombs each time.

They're also pretty awesome followed up with body butter! You can make your own homemade body butter with beeswax for the best results.

Why These DIY Sleepy Time Bath Bombs Are Effective

These DIY bath bombs for sleep are a classic, homemade recipe that contains two main ingredients of a detox bath.

The bath bombs are Epsom salt-based. I adore Epsom salts because they're made to help soothe aches and pains.

Furthermore, between their mineral properties and helping with muscle aches, they make a great addition to bath time.

Plus, they're magnesium-based which is ideal to help prep the body for sleep

Magnesium is a component of good sleep. I use Magnesium Powder from Perfect Supplements both in my baths when I take them as well as our kid's bedtime snack or my nighttime tea.

Magnesium is a mineral we're often deficient in and it promotes relaxation and removes the "fight or flight" feeling.

Thus, I've added it to these DIY bath bombs for sleep to help it do just that.

    Essential Oils For Sleep

The essential oils I use are a combination of two blends: Unwind from Saje and Sleep-Ease from Plant Therapy.

They promote breathing, relaxation, and calming. I actually adore this blend and use it for just about everything.

However, there are a lot of essential oils that promote sleep to choose from if you wish to make your own blend.

When it comes to the dilution rate of essential oils, most people agree that 5% is a good place for adults (and 0.5-1% for kids).

Which is about 10 drops per one tablespoon of carrier oil (this website states you can use up to 20 drops per tablespoon). So, while this would be alright for adults, I'd scaler back the amounts for kids. Here are my DIY bath bombs for kids.

    How To Color Them

These bath bombs with essential oils are also colored using mica powder, a non-toxic mineral that keeps these bombs all-natural.

I love using mica because it works so well and creates gorgeous colors but it does leave a colored ring around the tub.

Therefore, if this doesn't both you- rock it. If you're lazy (me) just omit the mica and leave them white.. they still work the same!

    Some other coloring options include:

    • soap dyes
    • ground herbs

    When To Use The Bombs

    • Relaxing after a long day
    • Before the kiddos head into their bedtime routine
    • As a homemade gift for friends

    How To Make Them

First, in a large bowl combine all dry ingredients and mix well. Make sure there are no clumps.

Then, in a small glass bowl, combine the almond oil, essential oils, and witch hazel. Whisk.

Pour the liquid mixture into the large bowl, it will fizz once the liquid touches it.

Begin mixing using a fork (or your hands) until everything looks combined and somewhat moist.

Finally, prep your silicone molds and use a spoon to fill the molds halfway. Using a silicone spatula, press the mixture into the molds firmly. Spray each mold with a small bit of water (one spray) and press down again to make sure they're firm.

Using too much water will cause the bombs to lose their fizz. Whereas if you don't press down firmly, the bombs will not hold together.

Divide the rest of the mixture into the molds and again press down firmly. Spray the top with water and press down again.

Finally, let sit on the counter for twenty-four hours to set before removing from molds.

    Notes

Note: from the mica powder and the almond oil these bombs will leave your bath a bit slippery- so take caution when getting out!
Tip: use anywhere from ⅛-1/2 teaspoon of mica powder keeping in mind that the more you use the more saturated the water will be with color. Mica powder does leave a ring in the tub.

Joy- thank you for letting me know the link is broken! It's linking to an extremely old post that has been lost in the jumble. The sleepy time blend I used to use is a combination of breathe (one drop) from DoTerra and a blend from Saje called "unwind" (5-10 drops). That said, I have since revised that as I learned that any peppermint blend isn't advised to kids under twelve. Now-a-days, I combine "Sleep-Ease" from PLant Therapy with the unwind blend or just use the unwind blend itself. Not sure if that helps but hopefully it gives a bit of info. And truly, thank you!

I love them! I actually use those oils mixed with witch hazel and water to make a "sleepy time" spray too for my pillow! Just fyi with the bath bombs that they can make the bathtub slippery so just be careful with him!
