All-natural and calming, these DIY mini bath bombs are perfect for kids before bed. This homemade bath bomb recipe uses a unique blend of essential oils to help induce calm and promote relaxation before bedtime.
Plus, they're mini in size so kids can drop in multiple DIY bath bombs and watch the fizz!
When it comes to bath time, kids love two things: bubbles & toys. And while a classic bath never goes out of style, it can definitely be improved...with some mini DIY mini bath bombs!
If you're still on the fence about how and why to make your own bath bombs, I've got you covered. After lots of trial and error, I finally found a system that works!
My Experience Making Homemade Bath Bombs
For a long time, DIY bath bombs were a bit of a mind boggle to me. I just couldn't get them to work. But after some serious trial and error, I finally found my system.
And while I adore giving nice big, DIY bath bombs as gifts (especially in cute shapes!), my daughter actually doesn't like them!
This actually blew my mind seeing as even I love watching them fizz! I wasn't sure what she disliked about them but I decided to give a few things a try.
Enter DIY MINI bath bombs! Instead of making super large bombs, I made them into little drops instead! This seemed to work much better for her though I still have no idea why.
Ingredients Safe For Kids
Both Epsom salt and baking soda are elements of a detox bath which can be wonderful for kids (and adults!) to relax, refresh, and soothe any aches. Check out this detox bath for kids especially.
Soothing Baths Help:
- Induce calm
- Promote circulation
- Ease aches from the day
Another amazing addition to the bathtime routine is magnesium. Magnesium has been shown to help promote sleep and relaxation. I personally use Magnesium Powder in smoothies or my bedtime tea (and the kids bedtime snack) and have found it works wonders.
There's also a magnesium spray which (if I haven't used the powder) we use on our feet before bed. However, if taking a bath, the powder can be added directly to it.
And of course, a weighted blanket for kids is always on the table!
Essential Oils To Promote Relaxation
The essential oils used in these DIY mini bath bombs are simply lemon and lavender. However, there are a lot of essential oils to help induce sleep!
Lemon is a naturally perky oil. It helps elevate your mood and most people upon inhaling will be reminded of something pleasant. While it's not one that necessarily makes you sleepy, it is one that invokes positive thoughts which I think is important before bed.
Lavender on the other hand, is amazing for any kind of skin irritation as it's soothing- and not just for the skin.
Lavender (essential oil and the plant itself) is ideal for inducing a calm state of mind. Which means it's perfect at the end of the day before bed and ideal for kiddos.
I actually use lavender in my calming baby butter as well as my homemade diaper wipe spray because it's so soothing.
That said, because these bath bombs are made for kids, you do have to be cautious about the dilution of the essential oils in the DIY bath bomb recipe.
I've heard it recommended anywhere from 5-20 drops of essential oils for bath bombs so I prefer to err on the lighter side. When not in the bath, normally a safe dilution would be 0.5-1% of essential oils to carrier oils.
For this homemade bath bomb recipe, I went with 8 drops in total given that there's only 1 tablespoon of oil. You can definitely use more if you feel comfortable!
Tips & Notes On Making Them
When it comes to making your own beauty products there's always going to be some trial and error. You can read everything you need to know to get started making your own products.
The scent and the color are optional for DIY bath bombs.
For this specific bath bomb recipe, I used mica powder which is an all-natural mineral. While this gives them a unique color it does leave a ring around the tub.
When I'm not making homemade bath bombs for gifts, I instead opt to leave them without any coloring or to use herbs instead.
How To Make Them
In a large bowl combine all dry ingredients and mix well. Make sure there are no clumps.
In a small glass bowl, combine the jojoba d oil, essential oils and witch hazel. Whisk.
Pour the liquid mixture into the large bowl, it will fizz once the liquid touches it.
Begin mixing using a fork (or your hands) until everything looks combined and somewhat moist.
Prep your silicone molds and use a spoon to fill the molds halfway. Using a silicone spatula, press the mixture into the molds firmly. Spray each mold with a small bit of water (one spray) and press down again to make sure they're firm.
Using too much water will cause the bombs to lose their fizz. If you don't press down firmly, the bombs will not hold together.
Divide the rest of the mixture into the molds and again press down firmly. Spray the top with water and press down again.
Let sit on the counter for twenty-four hours to set before removing from molds.
Note: from the mica powder and the oil these DIY bath bombs will leave your bath a bit slippery- so take caution when getting out!
Tip: use anywhere from ⅛-1/2 teaspoon of mica powder keeping in mind that the more you use the more saturated the water will be with color. Mica powder does leave a ring in the tub.

I would love to be in a bath with these right now. So luxurious!

Haha yes! It makes everything just a bit more relaxing!

Hello! Just wondering how much magnesium powder I should add to the kids bath bomb recipe? I'm not familiar with using magnesium yet.
fitasamamabear
I'd start small with a tablespoon personally! I put about 1/2 tsp into my kiddos bedtime snack so a tablespoon shouldn't overdo anything 🙂

I bet my girly girls would love adding these to their baths! I've never tried making bath bombs before.

They're pretty simple to make but check out my post on "why and how to make bath bombs"... I failed a lot in the beginning lol

I really like the mini-versions! I would use these over the larger ones!
Thanks for sharing! Pinning!

I love them too! I prefer them without any color (leaves a clean bathtub) but my daughter loves purple lol
Daniela
I feel calmer just having read through this! These sound heavenly though and I wish I could just live in a lavender bubble lol.

Could arrowroot powder be used in place of the cornstarch? What is the purpose of the cornstarch?
fitasamamabear
Yup it can! I alternate based on what's in the cupboard 😀 It helps bind them so one of another is necessary.
Heather
LOVE these and that they are mini! The big ones are often too much
fitasamamabear
Yes!!! Honestly, my kiddos adore that they're "teeny just like them" haha it makes them feel super special. Plus, kids just ant to keep dropping them in lol so this way you have more to do that 😉
jenny
Have you ever tried Vegetable Glycerin in place of the oil?
fitasamamabear
I actually haven't! I have some in the cupboard and have never actually used it haha. I can't see why it wouldn't work though truthfully, texture is the same and it's really just adding in a liquid...
Renee
I don’t have lemon oil but I do have fresh lemons. Can I substitute the oil with squeezed lemon rinds?
fitasamamabear
Yes! I love using the actual zest for DIY's. It won't be AS potent but it does make them look prettier! Just make sure you use a very fine zester!
