Only four ingredients in this DIY foot lotion recipe. This homemade whipped foot lotion uses magnesium flakes as well as peppermint essential oil to help nourish the feet.

It's also a great self-care option before bed! Whip up a batch of this whipped peppermint foot lotion and pamper your feet!

With minimal ingredients, this whipped DIY foot lotion is simple to make and an ideal gift! As mamas, we all need a bit of pampering. Pampering might mean taking a long hot shower, getting in a sweaty workout, or in this case, taking care of those feet!

Whip up a batch of this whipped foot lotion for yourself or gift it for a friend. But make sure to check out these classic Dos' & Don'ts when it comes to making homemade body butter.

Why You Should Use This DIY Foot Lotion Before Bed

This whipped foot lotion recipe has a secret ingredient: magnesium!

Unfortunately, we grow most of our vegetables in magnesium-deficient soil. Magnesium is a nutrient essential to our health.

Magnesium is found in bones, helps muscles and nerves, and also helps with metabolic activity.

But my favorite perk of magnesium is that it helps induce calm. Calm through your mind but also your bodily systems. It takes the "fight or flight" down a notch.

I make a sleepy time spray for the girls (or use DIY sleep salve) and spray it on their feet before bed (see below) because I find it works so well. Not only does it help boost nutrient intake but it induces calm before bed.

This is why this DIY foot lotion is great to help keep your feet silky but also as part of a pre-bedtime routine!

Why This Lotion Is Ideal For Moms

As mamas, we’re on our feet a lot. Both working and chasing littles. This leaves our feet feeling less silky than we’d like and more cracked and sore than we’d hoped!

This Peppermint DIY Foot Lotion is full of repairing, natural, hydrating ingredients making it perfect for your feet after a long soak (or a quick shower in most cases!).

    • Coconut oil is especially nourishing and helps with cracked heels and recipes like homemade deodorant. I personally use coconut oil for just about everything (literally almost all possible homemade products or gifts) partially for its hydration properties but also because it’s antibacterial.. something most feet need.
    • The shea butter is another form of hydration and it helps nourish and repair dry skin. It’s one of my favorite butter to use in DIY lotion recipes (check out my butter guide here) because it just keeps everything silky feeling.
    • Lastly, peppermint. Peppermint essential oil has been shown to help heal cuts, stings, and ease muscle tension (used beautifully in these headache remedy bath bombs!). So it only makes sense to massage some into your feet!

Note: if you're making this whipped foot lotion specifically for children, I would omit the peppermint essential oil.

Peppermint can sometimes be a stimulant to help us "wake up" which is contradictory to the magnesium. Instead, I would use lavender essential oil or leave out essential oils altogether. Here's where you can check out my favorite essential oils.

You can grab all these ingredients and check out my favorite brands here.

    Magnesium Powder Versus Magnesium Oil

I've actually used both the powder as well as the oil in this recipe and they both work! I do find that the powder blends much more easily whereas the oil separates slightly from the other ingredients.

    However, use what you have.

If using the magnesium oil for this DIY foot lotion, use 1.5 tablespoons for the batch and add it in when you add in the peppermint essential oil.

I opt to use Perfect Supplements Magnesium powder because it's so versatile! It's organic, contains no synthetics, additives, and is non-GMO.

The reason that I use this particular powder though is that I also whisk it into my tea at night!

Magnesium has a ton of benefits in terms of calming the system and preparing it for bed. Thus, I use the Perfect Supplements Magnesium Powder both in this whipped peppermint foot cream as well as in our bedtime snacks or tea. Use code mamabear10 and you can save some money too!

    Does It Harden?

Much of this depends on the environment you live in. If stored in a cool cupboard, the whipped peppermint foot lotion does harden when stored.

However, once it is on your skin (especially after a warm shower or bath) the DIY foot lotion begins to melt again.

Much of this is due to the coconut oil in the body butter recipe. Specifically, the colder coconut oil is the harder it becomes and vice versa.

Don't forget to pin this simply whipped peppermint foot lotion!

    Notes

If stored in the fridge this butter should last upwards of four to six weeks but the consistency is harder (due to the coconut oil solidifying). If left in the cupboard the lotion will only last three weeks depending on any moisture that gets into the jar.
Note: you can use magnesium oil in place of the powder. Use 1.5tbs. It will separate slightly but that's okay!

So technically I have to say like 4-8 weeks (so long as no water gets in it) but truthfully I've had mine for up to six months before without issues.

It's super easy! I like it because it's slightly firm but melts when on your foot so you're forced to rub it in and give yourself a mini foot massage 🙂
