Collagen is the glue that holds everything together and helps you to maintain the strength and elasticity of your skin's structure. Learn more about collagen powder and how to use it in your everyday diet to reap the benefits.

    What Is Collagen?

Technically, collagen is a protein. It is mostly found in bones, skin, connective tissues, and meat. It can be made from any animal but is mostly made from cows, chicken, and fish. Similar to bone broth but slightly different, collagen is a great addition to your diet. Learn more about the difference between collagen and bone broth.

Though whole food choices will always be superior, in our hectic lifestyles, it’s not always practical to consume foods high in collagen routinely. That’s why I as a Certified Nutrition Coach, love collagen powder.

    Benefits Of Consuming More Collagen

Aside from just bumping up your protein intake, collagen can help with a number of other systems in your body.

    • Better skin hydration
    • Less wrinkles
    • Improved digestion
    • Improves immune system
    • Supporting connective tissues
    • Firmer skin
    • Better skin elasticity
    • Improved recovery from exercise

Collagen isn't just about keeping your skin looking youthful. It also contributes to healthy hair and joint flexibility as well.

Think of collagen as the building blocks for connective tissues in your body. Not only does it support the structure of your skin, but it also strengthens bones, ligaments, tendons, and other connective tissues throughout your body.

Our skin is made up of roughly 80% collagen (source). So, increasing your intake is going to help.

    What Is Collagen Powder?

Collagen powder is just collagen peptides that are easily digestible. It is the easiest way to increase collagen in your diet. Similar to protein powder, it can be used in smoothies, baked goods, oatmeal, yogurt, and even coffee. Perfect Supplements is my go-to for collagen powder.

Though collagen powder doesn’t contain all essential amino acids like protein powder will, if you eat a varied diet you’ll still replenish your daily intake and reap the benefits of collagen.

Learn more about the difference between protein powder and collagen powder and why it's a protein food staple to keep in your pantry.

    Where To Buy Collagen Powder

Though nowadays you can get collagen powder at your local drugstore, I personally prefer to get mine from a quality source to ensure there are no extra “add ins” in my powder. Sweeteners, binding agents, and flavors are all unnecessary.

I use Perfect Supplements Collagen powder because it’s:

    • Sourced EXCLUSIVELY From Brazilian Pasture Raised (Grass Fed) Cows

    How To Use Collagen Powder

Collagen recipes are an easy way to enjoy a high protein snack or dessert and reap the benefits of collagen powder. Below are a couple of my favorites.

    • Collagen donuts
    • Blueberry muffins
    • Chocolate protein pudding
    • Protein pancakes

    FAQs

Does collagen powder break a fast?

Yes. Since collagen is a protein and needs to be broken down and digested, it does break a fast.

    Collagen liquid vs powder?

Both are great for getting more collagen in your body. However, they do have their differences. Collagen powder has more protein in it per serving but collagen liquid is absorbed easier.

Can you mix collagen with protein powder?

Sure. But it depends on the question: do you want to mix them together in the same serving? If you are adding collagen to reap the benefits of collagen specifically, go for it. If you're adding it in to get more protein, it's probably just worth upping the serving of your protein powder and using collagen on its own in something different.

Or, if you're asking if you can mix them together throughout the day (for example have a protein shake in the morning and a collagen donut in the afternoon) the answer is of course. Both are great proteins.
