Homemade Diaper Wipe Solution (Baby Wipe Solution For Cloth Diapers)

Modified: Jun 26, 2025 · by Shelby Stover · This post may contain affiliate links · 10 Comments

An easy homemade diaper wipe solution made with minimal ingredients! This baby wipes solution can be made into a spray for cloth wipes or used as a solution to make homemade disposable baby wipes. Likewise, this natural DIY diaper wipes spray is cost-effective and soothing on new baby skin!

In our house, we're cloth diaper addicts! Even before I was pregnant I knew I wanted to use cloth diapers and after two babes, I've definitely learned all the ins and outs (read more about what NOT to do when using cloth diapers!).

And since our diapering service also came with reusable cloth wipes, homemade diaper wipe solution was a no-brainer to me.

Not only is this baby wipes solution really simple and better for our babe's skin, but it's also much easier on the environment, as is this baby body butter recipe!

And since the spray takes about 120s to throw together, it's not too big an inconvenience either.

    Why Homemade Diaper Wipe Solution?

Traditional baby wipes have some pretty random and potentially harmful ingredients in them. And sometimes these ingredients can:

    • cause skin irritations
    • dry out babes skin
    • can be endocrine disruptors

For me, babes' skin is the purest of things. I want to snuggle my babes and not coat them in sketchy ingredients.

Making my own homemade baby wipes solution just seemed like a no-brainer to me. This DIY baby wipes solution helps:

    • keep the skin soft
    • contains no "fragrance" only natural ingredients and oils (optional)
    • soothes inflammation
    • is super cost-effective

    But How Does It Clean?

When I first started making my own baby wipes spray, I had a couple of people express concern that Baby Bear wouldn't be clean enough (jeez thanks). So let's break this down:

First off, Baby Bear gets a bath every night. It's part of her bedtime routine and letting her tush soak in sea salt help keeps it clean and soft

I also had someone kindly inform me that this spray just wasn't strong enough to keep a babes bum clean. That I needed the chemicals in the wipes to keep her sanitary.

My response was: "really? Do you sterilize your bum every time you go to the washroom?" I didn't think so. Furthermore, I find, so long as you are properly cleaning your babe when changing you shouldn't have any issues.

    Ingredients

    Aloe Vera Gel

Using this gel helps soothe the babes' bottom as it's anti-inflammatory. We all know how bad diaper rash can be and the aloe helps reduce a burn. Thus, it's nice, cooling, and good for the skin.

    Sweet Almond Oil

I use a bit of this to keep the babes bum silky and soft. Obviously, you don't want that precious skin to dry out so the oil in the recipe helps prevent that. Naturally, for babies, I do like to infuse the oil with lavender to help with any irritation. Learn more about this from my calming baby butter.

    Dr. Bronners Castille Soap

This soap is extremely mild and fragrance-free so perfect for babies. Adding a little bit of soap to the mix just helps clean it up

    Essential Oils

Personally, I use tea tree to give it a bit more of a disinfection boost, lavender to help prevent any skin irritation, and chamomile because it's calming. It goes without saying to make sure your babe has no sensitivities to these oils before using them in such a delicate place. Also, because the oils are so watered down the potency is pretty little but best to be sure.

Update: I've spent some time learning about the safety of essential oils from lea Jacobson. And while I most definitely do use essential oils with my kids (specifically the kid-safe ones from plant Therapy) using them under one year old is still a very debated subject.

Thus moving forward with my third babe, I'll most omit the essential oils for the first year (instead I'll infuse herbs into oil and add a teaspoon or so of that) to feel a bit safer. You can learn about which herbs to infuse into an oil here.

Substitutions & Tweaks For The Spray

Since I no longer recommend using essential oils on babies under one year old, I instead infuse lavender and chamomile into the almond oil to help soothe skin and calm inflammation. If you do choose to use essential oils, you need the almond oil to bind the oils (act as a carrier) in the recipe also.

However, if you notice your baby has exceptionally acidic pee (I notice this around 14 months), the best thing you can do is omit the oil. Oil tends to "trap in" the redness/burning. If you're experiencing this, omit the oil from the spray for a bit and let babe air out more often!

    Notes

Note: I used this wipe spray for almost a year before baby bear had her first diaper rash. After that, I omitted the almond oil in the recipe as oil only furthers diaper rash when it's due to acidic pee.
