Deliciously sweetened and naturally gluten-free blueberry bagels for breakfast? Yes please! This easy bagel recipe is a refreshing burst of blueberry flavor first thing in the morning. Easy to make (no blanching!) and delicious smeared with just butter or your favorite jam.

A blueberry bagel cut in half and openfaced smeared with butter with another bagel behind it and more on a dark cutting board with a stick of honey

Keeping busy mornings simple, that’s the benefit of these gluten-free blueberry bagels! These bagels are made with minimal ingredients and have a hint of honey in them to sweeten you up in the mornings.

No need to overcomplicate breakfast, just have these blueberry bagels on hand and pop them into the toaster or oven while you’re getting ready!

    Why You'll Love This Recipe

    • They’re easy to make (no blanching or rolling!)
    • Allergy-friendly (dairy-free, gluten-free, vegetarian)
    • Chewy out of the oven like a traditional bagel
    • They give you a burst of summer with fresh blueberries

    Ingredients You’ll Need

The best part of these blueberry bagels is that they're easy to whip up. No malted barley flour, bread flour, active dry yeast, or dough hook is needed. In fact, you probably have most of the ingredients on hand!

Gluten-Free all purpose flour: not to be confused with baking flour or even bread flour, gluten-free flour absorbs a lot of liquid and gives these blueberry bagels their chewy texture.

Dairy-free yogurt: the yogurt helps the texture of the bagels and keeps them from becoming too dense. Any dairy-free yogurt should work so long as it’s not Greek Yogurt.

Quick yeast: we want to keep these gluten-free bagels as simple as possible so opt for dry yeast (not active dry yeast) to keep the prep quick!

Small blueberries: the smaller the blueberries the more flavor you’ll have as they’ll be distributed better. Tiny, wild blueberries are best. If you have a bag of frozen ones, know that this blueberry protein shake is another great way to use them up!

Honey: you don’t need a lot, just enough to add a hint of comfort. Opt for real honey and not processed.

Egg whites: used to harden the top of the bagel and give them some shine so that they look a little more traditional.

How To Make Gluten-Free Blueberry Bagels

    1. Mix the flour, yeast, and cinnamon.
    2. Add in the yogurt and honey.
    3. Mix until sticky, cover, and let sit.
    4. Stir in the blueberries.
    5. Portion and press each dough ball down into shape. Then, press a teaspoon into the middle.
    6. Brush the egg wash over top.
    7. Bake

    Important Teaching Tips & Substitutions

Any non-dairy yogurt will work for the blueberry bagels so long as it is thinner. Greek yogurt will be too thick.

Regular flour (or bread flour) cannot be used in place of gluten-free flour because they don’t absorb the same way and would alter the bagel dough.

Make sure to press all the way through the bagel dough with the teaspoon. Otherwise, your bagel will “grow over”.

What To Top The Blueberry Bagels With

These bagels, like most gluten-free bagels, are delicate so don't go spreading rock hard butter on them! However, we love them with:

    • Nut butter of any sort
    • Chia jam
    • Fried egg
    • Deli meat to make a yummy sandwich
    • Softened dairy-free cream cheese

    How To Store Them

These blueberry bagels are soft but chewy right out of the oven and will last 2-3 days on the counter.

If stored in the fridge they will stay fresh up to 5 days but they do firm up. Let the bagels sit a bit at room temperature before slicing them. Then, heat them up lightly until warmed through.

Not only will they soften up but they're easier to top with something like cream cheese when heated or toasted.

I'd suggest not freezing the gluten-free bagels though as they just don't thaw with quite the same texture.

Frequently Asked Questions About Gluten-Free Blueberry Bagels

Would these work with regular yogurt?

These bagels haven’t been tested with regular yogurt. However, they should work just fine with yogurt that is 0-2% fat. Though Greek yogurt will boost the protein intake, it is too thick and will alter the texture of the bagels.

How long do homemade bagels last?

These bagels last 2-3 days on the counter in an airtight container. Though they will last up to a week in the fridge, they do tend to get a bit too firm. Make sure to heat them up before eating them as that’s when they taste best.

    Can I use frozen blueberries?

Fresh blueberries work best for the bagel dough because frozen blueberries will add too much liquid when they cook.

How come boiling isn't required in this recipe?

Honestly I don't think they'd hold up in boiling and I've never tried. They're amazing "fresh" bagels but not a traditional bagel in that sense. This just keeps it easy for when you're short on time.

Bagels are a special thing every so often for my family, but I never partake because I'm gluten free. I loved making these with my kids and enjoying them together as a family. Thanks for a great recipe!

It's so nice to have that "treat" when you're gluten free, sometimes it gets lonely not being able to have your favorites with everyone!

GF recipes are always a gamble. This one wasn’t my favorite. Our bagels didn’t really rise and remained pretty mushy. It is an easy recipe though and I like the idea since I miss traditional bagels !
