This pomegranate protein shake is bright, refreshing, and surprisingly filling. Made with pomegranate arils and collagen powder, it blends up in about 5 minutes and delivers a smooth, drinkable texture that works just as well for breakfast as it does post-workout. It’s naturally dairy-free, easy to make dairy-free, and packed with antioxidants to help you feel energized, not weighed down (kind of like this watermelon slushie recipe)
If you’re worried about pomegranate being too tart, don’t be, a little extra fruit or a splash of coconut milk mellows it out beautifully. I love this smoothie on busy mornings (along with this collagen breakfast smoothie) because it feels light and refreshing but still keeps me full. You can also prep freezer packs ahead of time, so all you have to do is add liquid and blend.

💭Why You'll Love This Recipe
Minimal ingredients: With only a handful of ingredients, this pomegranate protein shake is easy to whip up.
Kid-friendly: Thanks to its pretty color and quality protein source, this smoothie is a hit with both kids and adults.
Versatile: Use the pomegranate shake as a low-calorie breakfast or quick and easy snack.
Ingredients and Substitutions

Though bananas do wonders to make a smoothie creamy, it’s nice to switch up your ingredients every once in a while which is why this smoothie recipe is banaan-free (learn more about how to build the best smoothie!).
- Pomegranate Arils: This protein smoothie uses the actual arils instead of pomegranate juice (just like this pomegranate watermelon drink).. These arils are rich in fiber and antioxidants. All of which you’re getting by using the seeds instead of concentrated juice. This is how I remove the pomegranate seeds.
- Coconut milk: Make sure to use canned coconut milk (the white part, not the water!) for best results (this is actually one of my crucial pantry staples for a gluten-free diet).
- Collagen powder: The cleanest protein you’ll find. Perfect Supplements collagen powder is sourced from grass-fed cows. It’s an ideal way to get more protein into your diet and a clean option for kids.
See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.
Flavor Variations
Berry burst: If you want to stretch the smoothie further, add in some fresh or frozen strawberries to give it more of a berry flavor. Opt for a ½ cup of frozen fruit (strawberries are best to maintain the color of the smoothie). If doing this, you’ll want to add in ¼ cup of water.
Toppings: Create new flavors with the toppings you choose. Some of our favorites are crunchy cinnamon granola, nut butter, more berries or coconut whip cream.

Expert Tips To Make It
Every blender is unique in how well it processes ingredients. Pomegranate seeds can be tricky. I use a Vitamix and need to blend for about one minute.
If you have a less powerful blender, you need to process the smoothie longer so that it comes out creamy and not chunky.
If you want a thicker smoothie, you'll want to add in a frozen fruit. Mango is great for ultra-thickness, but it will make the smoothie very light pink in color. Frozen strawberries or frozen bananas work as well.
Any protein powder can work in the pomegranate shake. Collagen powder, whey protein, and beef isolate protein will result in a delicious smoothie. Vegan protein powder will make a thicker smoothie as it absorbs more liquid.
Meal Prepping It
This pomegranate shake tastes best when freshly made, like most smoothies. However, you can make it in advance and save some time.
To do this, place all the ingredients in a plastic bag except the liquid. Freeze them. When you need them in the morning, bang the bag on the counter to break it up and pop the ingredients into a blender with the liquid. This works for almost all my Superfood Smoothies.
Pomegranate Smoothie FAQs
Pomegranate seeds (called arils) can be blended into a smoothie. They’re an easy way to make your smoothie recipe vibrant as well as take in some additional antioxidants. However, you’ll need a powerful blender like a Vitamix to ensure the arils are fully mixed into the smoothie, and no texture from them remains.
In a pomegranate smoothie, berries tend to create an ideal flavor. Opt for fresh or frozen raspberries or strawberries to maintain the vibrant color of pomegranates.
Though pomegranate juice will still have nutrients, it has normally been processed or watered down. Thus, consuming the arils will always be more potent health-wise.
To make a pomegranate smoothie less tart, pair it with a sweet fruit like strawberries, mangos, or even dates.

My blender isn't great so I had to blend a bit longer, but it was worth it! I loved the slight nuttiness of the fresh arils compared to store-bought pomegranate juice. I will try with strawberries next.

I've made a smoothie with pomegranate seeds before and it was such a pain (you had to blend them up, then filter them out, reblend, etc.). This is so much easier and so good!
