Candy canes for breakfast? These protein-baked oats (no banana!) are festive, filling, and perfect for Christmas morning. You can prep them the night before and bake them fresh while you enjoy the magic, just like these candy cane overnight oats with protein powder or these easy cranberry maple chicken thighs. They’ve got a chewy texture, a minty-sweet flavor, just like these paleo candy cane donuts.
I adore these banana-free baked oats because they’re simple, festive, and fit right into my Holiday wellness tips mindset. They’re high in protein, making them a smart way to kick off your morning (learn more about the benefits of a high protein diet) and the perfect pair to support your 12 days of Christmas workout.

💭Why You'll Love This Recipe
Allergy-friendly: These baked oats without banana are dairy-free, gluten-free, and nut-free, so that no one with allergies misses out. Plus, they have 19 grams of protein.
Easy to make: All you need to do is blend the baked oats, pour, and then bake, which means they come together super fast.
Make them ahead of time: They can actually be made the night before and then just baked in the morning to save time.
Versatile: Not only can you swap the candy canes for another flavor (like chocolate chips), but you can also make these baked oats in individual portions or a baking loaf with slices.
Ingredients and Substitutions

Though most protein-baked oatmeal recipes will call for bananas, you won’t find them here (or in these low calorie baked oats)! These blended oats are sweetened with honey instead and are completely banana-free.
- Old-fashioned rolled oats: Make sure that they’re certified gluten-free if you need them to be. Unfortunately, quick oats and steel-cut oats don’t tend to work as well for this recipe. Learn more about different types of oats and how to use them.
- Egg whites: I use cartoned egg whites, not actually whites separated.
- Collagen powder: The secret in this baked oats recipe! Collagen powder is the cleanest source of protein you can choose!
- Honey: Though maple syrup will work in its place, it will change the texture slightly.
- Hemp milk: Any non-dairy milk will work for baked oats. We use homemade hemp milk or almond milk the most, though.

Flavor Variations
The protein-baked oats without bananas are delicious just as they’re made. However, there are a variety of ways to change the taste and adapt them.
Spinkles and add-ins: Change the candy canes to festive sprinkles, chocolate chips, or chopped pecans.
Toppings: Opt for Whole30 whipped cream, coconut milk caramel sauce, drizzled nut butter, or dairy-free chocolate glaze to make it extra special.

Step 2: Process for 1-2 minutes.

Step 3: Pour the mixture into a lined loaf pan and sprinkle in some crushed candy canes. Swirl with a fork.

Expert Tips To Make It
These high-protein baked oats are made without bananas, which means that they’re sweet but not too sweet, kind of like crispy sugar cookies. Likewise, bananas tend to thicken the oats. These blended baked oats are light but chewy instead of thick or creamy.
Not all the oats will blend when you process them, that’s okay! Just make sure to distribute the mixture evenly so one is not all liquid and the other all oats.
You know the baked oats are done when you insert a toothpick into the middle of them and it comes out almost clean.
Choose a quality collagen powder so that you reap the biggest benefits. I use Perfect Supplements for all my collagen powder recipes because it uses pasture-raised beef. Use code mamabear10 if you try it to save some money.
There are actually two different ways to make this baked oats recipe:
- If making these baked oats in a loaf pan, make sure to line it first, otherwise, they will stick.
- If making this baked oats recipe and portioning them into individual silicone molds so that everyone can top their own, you will only need to bake them for 20 minutes.
How To Meal Prep and Store Them
To meal prep the recipe: blend the protein-baked oats ingredients, get them into the baking loaf, and mix in your candy canes. Then, pop it in the fridge overnight. In the morning, let them sit at room temperature for a few minutes before baking.
Store the oats: Once cooled, store leftover Christmas baked oats in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat them in the microwave or in the oven on low. If reheating in the oven, add a splash of dairy-free milk to keep them moist.
Baked Oats Without Bananas FAQS
Though whey protein powder may be able to be substituted in for the collagen powder, it may alter the texture a bit. Know that vegan protein powder can definitely not be used, as it absorbs too much liquid.
If you have leftover baked oatmeal, you can store it in an airtight container in the fridge. When you reheat them, do it on the stove and add a bit more milk to them so they don’t dry out. Or, pop the leftovers into a smoothie to make it extra thick!
Instead of banana in oats, you can use canned pumpkin, applesauce, or yogurt. All of which will help keep baked oats moist and sweet.

You have the best recipes ever- I love your blog- keep posting please! If not using this for Christmas and skipping the candy canes, could I use vanilla extract instead of peppermint & do sprinkles? Or any suggestions to make variations of this?

You are the sweetest, thank you! And yep, vanilla is a wicked variation. I personally add chocolate chips or sometimes nuts to it too.

With alpha-gal syndrome, I cannot consume any mammalian products, so I'm always looking for good sources of protein that work for my food allergy. While regular collagen is out, this seems like it will work with marine collagen (which is safe for us alpha gals). Do you agree? Can't wait to try this!
