Need a quick and easy snack that’s both gluten-free and high in protein? This chocolate chip mug cake has your name on it!

Deliciously indulgent and made in under two minutes, this healthy, high protein mug cake is a bite of soft, cakey flavor swirled with gooey chocolate chips.

Made with just a handful of ingredients, the best part about this chocolate chip mug cake is that it gives you a burst of fuel, too!

If you’re the kind of person who gets post-dinner cravings, this is your solution (or this apple mug cake for cozy fall nights).

Personally, I aim to get my clients taking in over 100 grams of protein per day… and recipes like this help you do that. Without hating your diet plan (this is also the base for these mom-inspired meal plans).

    Why You'll Love This Recipe

Easy to make all you need to do is mix everything in a mug and microwave it!

Allergy-friendly this mug cake recipe is dairy-free and gluten-free.

Protein packed thanks to vegan protein powder and eggs, this gluten-free mug cake comes in with 19 grams of protein.

    Ingredients You Need

Skip the melted butter, granulated sugar, and traditional cake ingredients for this healthy chocolate chip mug cake!

Gluten-free 1:1 baking flour: this gives some substance to the protein powder mug cake and makes it so it actually tastes light, and fluffy like cake. It works in this carrot mug cake too.

Vegan protein powder: know that the protein powder you choose will affect the taste and flavor of the mug cake. For best results, opt for a pea protein powder. Also, learn the difference between collagen vs protein powder to know which one is best for your goals.

Baking powder: helps the protein mug cake recipe rise.

Eggs: Give it a cake-like feel and helps hold everything together.

Maple syrup: the best way to sweeten a recipe! Opt to use real maple syrup for better flavor.

Chocolate chips: make sure to use allergy-friendly chocolate chips as needed. We use regular or large-size chips to create a gooey texture.

Multiple ingredients to make a chocolate chip protein mug cake in measuring cups with text labels over them.

    How To Make It

    1. In a microwave-safe mug, combine all the ingredients but only half the chocolate chips.
    2. Mix well.
    3. Top the mug cake with the remaining chocolate chips
    4. Microwave for 65 seconds
    5. Let cool fully and enjoy

    Important Teaching Tips

The mug cake will deflate ever so slightly coming out of the microwave. Likewise, it is hot so make sure to let it cool before you dive in,

Large chocolate chips give the protein mug cake recipe a gooey center which is awesome.

The reason you split up the chocolate chips is because they end to fall to the bottom. This way, you get some in the first few bites too.

Protein powder tends to stick on the bottom so make sure to really stir the mixture before microwaving.

The healthy protein mug cake hasn’t been tested with whey protein powder. My guess is that it would need more cook time as whey doesn’t absorb liquid like a vegan protein.

    Which Protein Powder To Choose

This chocolate chip mug cake works best with a pea protein powder. Pea protein tends to absorb a lot of liquid.

Though brown rice protein will work as well, it tends to have a chalkier flavor.

Genuine Health’s Fermented Vegan Protein Powder is one of my favorites because it helps you truly fuel.

Made with 20 grams of plant-based protein, this vegan powder is dairy-free, gluten-free, non-GMO, and certified organic.

But my personal favorite is that this protein is fermented. This normally meals a little less "protein powder bloat" because it helps break down the grains, nuts, and legumes.

This protein powder literally gives you the best of both worlds.

    Topping The Mug Cake

As mentioned, you can make this protein powder mug cake super indulgent or just a mini “anytime” treat.

The majority of the time, I just pop on some 2-minute coconut whipped cream and call it a day. However, if you want something more indulgent, here are some wicked toppings that we love are:

    • Dairy-free chocolate ganache
    • Dairy-free caramel sauc with coocnut milk
    • Drizzled peanut butter

Of course for a full on dessert, vanilla ice cream works on top of this chocolate chip mug cake as well 😉

Frequently Asked Questions About Mug Cakes

    Why are mug cakes chewy?

Mug cakes become chewy when the batter is overcooked. Always microwave it for just sixty seconds and check it with a toothpick. If it’s not quite done, pop it back in for increments of ten seconds, checking each time.

How to make a protein cake in a mug

Making chocolate protein mug cake is super simple. All you need to do is whisk together the ingredients in a microwave-safe mug and heat for 60-90 seconds until cooked through.

Can you make this mug cake ahead of time?

Chocolate protein mug cake tastes best when freshly made. Since it only takes 75 seconds to whip up, wait until you plan on eating it before whipping it up.

    Notes

If you're using pea protein powder, add in 1.5 tbs of milk to the chocolate chip mug cake batter. If you're using a brown rice-based protein powder or a coconut protein powder like Botanica, leave the recipe as is.
The mug cake will deflate ever so slightly coming out of the microwave- but don't reduce the baking powder. Likewise, it is hot so make sure to let it cool before you dive in,
Large chocolate chips give the protein mug cake a gooey center which is awesome.
The reason you split up the chocolate chips is because they end to fall to the bottom. This way, you get some in the first few bites too.
Protein powder tends to stick on the bottom so make sure to really stir the mixture before microwaving.
The protein mug cake recipe hasn’t been tested with whey protein powder. My guess is that it would need more cook time as whey doesn’t absorb liquid like a vegan protein.
If you use traditional all-purpose in place of gluten-free flour know that the mug cake expands a bit too much (over the top of the mug) and deflates.

I love this recipe because making a whole cake or whole batch of cookies means my whole family and I get overloaded with sweets. We can make these mug cakes and satisfy a dessert craving, but when it's gone it's gone and I don't have to worry about the kids asking for more. I also love that the protein boost keeps us from continuing to feel snacky.

It's nice that it's small serving. I'll eat everything in the house if it's there so I get it!
