Note: I am not a doctor, herbalist, aromatherapist or chemist. I am just an everyday mom trying to figure out how to live naturally. This recipe is one that works for myself and my family. Please consult your doctor before using any diy recipe or essential oils to confirm that they are safe for you. This holds especially important if you are currently pregnant.
The Smoothest, Easiest, DIY Lip Chap
Lip chap was one of the first DIY recipes I made when I first started my holistic journey. I love lip chap. LOVE it. I feel the need to put it on about twenty times a day. So making my own seemed like a no-brainer for me.
However, after about ten recipe trials, I realized it wasn’t that easy. Sure the lip chaps were okay but definitely not stellar. Some came out too hard (too much beeswax) others too runny (coconut oil is temperature dependent) and some too gritty (the ingredients didn’t blend). I still used all of them (I’m Dutch remember?) but I wasn’t impressed.
Until this recipe.
This lip chap recipe is easily the smoothest one I have tried. In fact, once I started using it I have since refused to even experiment with others as it’s not worth the time. Most recipes fill about 10-20 bottles (dependent) so if you make a “it’s only alright” lip chap, you’re stuck with a lot of unsatisfactory inventory.

But with this recipe, you’ll want a lot! Not only is it smart to have multiple backups but I love giving these away for Christmas to friends and family.
But I totally understand that not everyone is into the diy thing. It may seem super complicated or you’re just busy af (hello… mom life!). If that’s the case, grab the creamsicle lip balm from Primally Pure. It smells SO GOOD and Primally Pure uses only natural, chemical free ingredients that I can legit pronounce. And fun fact: use code fitasamamabear to save 10% on your ENTIRE first order. Savings for the win!
This particular lip chap is Chocolate Peppermint (you’ll want to eat it I swear!). It is perfect to keep your lips hydrated but also to sooth already chapped lips.
If you’re not a peppermint fan you can swap another scent (orange in the summer is nice). But due to the cocoa butter there is a chocolate-y scent regardless. I wouldn’t suggest swapping the cocoa butter though as it’s what helps keep this recipe ultra smooth.

The Smoothest, Easiest, DIY Lip Chap
Ingredients
- 2 tbs coconut oil
- 1 tbs cocoa butter
- 1 tbs sweet almond oil
- 2 tbs beeswax
- Peppermint essential oil
- Lip balm tubes
Instructions
-
In a double boiler melt the first four ingredients until fully liquid, whisk every so often. Remove from heat and whisk in the essential oil. The brand of the oil will designate how much you put in. Brands like DoTerra & Young are pretty pure so 5 ish drops is plenty. Others, like Now, you need about 20.
-
Quickly pour the melted oil into the lip balm tubes - seriously, be quick! Yu don't want the oil to set. Allow the oil to set and top up if needed. Cap the containers but leave them to set overnight without touching so they solidify completely.
