How To Be Natural & Normal At The Same Time
Finding balance between being a holistic mama and being “normal” (well, not being ostracized by your friends!) can be a struggle. I know it’s definitely one for me! (read about my journey to becoming a natural mama here)
Many people assume that because I lean more towards a natural lifestyle that it has to be all or nothing. I must always take the holistic approach and do everything with “what is healthiest in mind”. But just like everything else in life, it’s not a black and white approach and you don’t have to “go big or go home”.
When I first started transitioning to making my own stuff, I started just with making my own lotion and lip chap. I still used regular toothpaste and cleaners and everything else “bad” for me.
Gradually, as I learned more, had more time and was actually interested in what I was doing, I swapped things in our house for homemade or more natural alternatives. But I didn’t do it all at once and I still haven’t done it all.
Because you don’t need to take an all or nothing approach with health or things you enjoy. Period.
And this is the truth of the matter. With everything coming out as healthy alternatives, a lot of mamas end up feeling frustrated, overwhelmed and down on themselves for not changing everything they know.
And I hate that.
There is always going to be something you could do better. Always. But it doesn’t mean you have to do it now. Instead, make choices that work best for your family and your peace of mind at this time. Trying to do everything won’t cause anything but stress. And every little change you make can have a big result.
It drives me bat crap crazy that while a lot of people think of me as a hippie (and I guess I totally am) more people are surprised that I do normal things. Like eat chips, drink alcohol and in this case, eat candy cane ice cream (which i love).
Just because you enjoy some aspects of a holistic lifestyle doesn’t mean you agree with every natural alternative out there. Or maybe you agree with it but simple are not ready to change it. And that’s okay.
Do your best with what you’re given but don’t forget to enjoy, indulge & laugh.
Those three things are crucial to life.

People assume that because you do one thing you must buy into the complete lifestyle. But there is no right way for everyone. As mamas, we’re all just trying to do the best we can with what we’ve got. And that needs to be enough.
