“The pork rind crumbs gave the beef patties a nice texture and the mushroom gravy was so rich. Served it over mashed potatoes and this made my dinner a complete meal. Definitely making this again!” - Marie

Black slow cooker with salisbury steak patties, onions, and mushrooms in a gravy.

A hearty, gluten-free dinner that’s family-approved. This Salisbury steak is quickly browned before being cooked to perfection in the slow cooker to meld the rich flavor.

As a Certified Nutrition Coach, I serve it with your favorite side dish like steamed rice, mashed potatoes, or simply roasted root vegetables to complete the meal.

It’s a comforting recipe that’s perfect for an easy Sunday night dinner on a cool fall day, just like these gluten-free comfort food dinner recipes.

    Why You’ll Love This Recipe

Budget Friendly: with this gluten-free Salisbury steak recipe you get a lot out of a little and most of the ingredients are easy pantry staples you probably have.

Flavorful: the beef is simply seasoned but the yummy tastes are brought out fully because it cooks so long in the slow cooker. It’s comfort food at its finest.

Allergy-friendly: this Salisbury steak recipe is dairy-free, gluten-free, paleo, and keto-friendly.

    Ingredients and Substitutions

When it comes to dairy-free and gluten-free dinner recipes, I try to have most of the ingredients come right out of your gluten-free pantry staples. However, there are a few substitutions you can use in a pinch.

Ground beef: grab the lean ground beef to reduce the grease released. You can also sub in ground venison if you have it.

Pork rind crumbs: these help bind the beef patties and give a savory flavor. However, gluten-free bread crumbs or even certified gluten-free oat flour will work also.

Gluten-free Worcestershire sauce: Double-check that the one you’re using is gluten-free. In a pinch, soy sauce (or coconut aminos) will work in its place.

Garlic & onion: mince the garlic yourself or grab the pre-chopped garlic in a jar. Make sure to chop both finely though so it’s not chunky in the mixture. For a flavor switch-up, leeks work in place of onions (just like in this slow cooker Tuscan Chicken). Though garlic powder and onion powder will work, it does change the flavor and obviously the texture a bit. Fresh is best.

Basics: you need egg, salt, and pepper for the beef patties.

Tallow: I use tallow to amp up my healthy fats. However, dairy-free butter or avocado oil works as well.

Broth: beef broth makes the most sense for the recipe and Kettle and Fire have a great pre-made one. However, in a pinch, I use bone broth powder because I always have some on hand.

Reap the benefits of homemade bone broth but skip the time in the kitche. Bone broth powder gives you the best of both worlds and makes healing, homemade broth in just 2 minutes.

Mushrooms: button mushrooms are used most however, cremini mushrooms give a great flavor to the dish.

Xanthan gum: this is used to thicken the gravy and a little bit goes a long way. Tapioca starch will work in its place but not as well.

    Important Teaching Tips

Make sure your hamburger is cooked fully to 165F before eating. Use a meat thermometer for this.

You don’t need to cook the hamburger fully when you brown it, you just want to sear in the flavor. It will finish cooking in the slow cooker.

Use a paper towel to remove the dirt from the mushrooms. Washing them with a wet cloth makes them absorb moisture.

Store leftover Salisbury steak patties in an airtight container after cooling. In the fridge, they will last roughly three days.

If possible, store the sauce and patties separately as they’re easier to reheat like this.

Make ahead: the Salisbury steak patties can be prepped up to a day in advance. Mix the ingredients together and portion the raw beef into patties before placing them on a plate wrapped with plastic wrap and into the fridge.

When you need them, begin by browning each side and then cooking as per the remaining directions.

What To Serve With Gluten-Free Salisbury Steak

We like to keep it pretty simple and serve ours with steamed rice and roasted root vegetables.

However, some other great side dishes are:

    • Cauliflower rice
    • Candied Brussels sprouts
    • Mashed potatoes

My kids love when I serve this over gluten-free noodles and use the gravy as sauce.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is Salisbury steak?

Salisbury steak is a type of seasoned hamburger that’s typically made into patties and held together with breadcrumbs. It’s then cooked stovetop to sear in the flavor and covered with a rich, mushroom gravy.

    Does Salisbury steak contain eggs?

Traditional Salisbury steak uses egg and breadcrumbs to bind the beef pattes together. That said, I have personally used gluten-free 1:1 baking flour and eliminated both the pork rinds (or breadcrumbs) and egg with good results. This is because gluten-free flour absorbs so much grease and liquid, rendering the egg useless. So, it’s not completely necessary.
