Introduction

Welcome to the Fitasamamabear podcast. I’m Shelby, a certified strength coach, nutrition coach, mama to two, and all-around health nut. This show is about a little bit of everything healthy, fit and natural related. And if you’re striving to smash goals, eat better, feel better, and enjoy the occasional mom rant, this is the place for you. You’re listening into episode nineteens today where I’m ranting a wee bit on why you need this one tip to improve your health.

How To Be Healthy (0:26)

And here we are. I’m excited about this topic today because I went off on a crazy rant to a client the other day and realized that everyone else should probably enjoy my rants also.

So, I’m sure every single person listening right now knows someone who jumped into a diet for the new year, keto, carnivore, whole 30, paleo in order to be healthy. There’s a lot of them out there.

Maybe this is you yourself. And the truth is there’s a lot you can do to be healthy. Even the diets I just mentioned, technically still have a lot of perks to them.

But here’s the most basic step you can take today to be healthy, feel better, look better and live longer.

Are you ready for it?

Stop eating shit. Seriously, that’s the trick.

Each of the diets I mentioned have one major thing in common. They restrict or reduce processed food and that’s one of the reasons they work well.

Dieting (1:12)

I’m not a diet fan. They do each have some other perks going for them, but the biggest reason these changes produce results is because the person doing them cuts back on crap food.

Think about it. All of those diets eliminate or drastically reduce processed food. All you need to do is stop eating shit or at least reduce your intake to be healthy.

I’m pretty sure processed foods will truthfully be the death of us all. We’ve gotten so far away from eating legit foods it’s insane. Our daily food intake consists of fast food, burgers, packaged crap like chips, boxed side dishes. And then to top it off, crappy pre-packaged desserts.

Eliminate or stop eating processed foods. A lot of people ask me what this means and while it’s super clear to me, I realize that it may not be clear to everyone else.

So, look at where I came from: originally what I was eating long before I started my fitness journey. I didn’t cook, I lived off of restaurant pasta, McDonald’s, pizza pockets, and then our “fancy meal”, which is what we’d cook on Sundays, was normally some sort of protein and a sidekicks package, which is pretty much Kraft Dinner.

Eliminate Processed Foods To Be Healthy (2:21)

The reason you need to eliminate processed foods is because they’re terrible for you. That is what is causing so many issues within our bodies. They just don’t know how to process them.

They don’t know how to break them down. They’re loaded with sugars and oils that don’t make sense, and just they provide little to no nutritional value. They do nothing to build you up.

So, eliminate or stop eating processed foods.

There’s No Magic Pill (2:48)

There’s a lot you can do. And while I don’t believe in a magic pill, I do believe in nutrient-dense foods, which is why I regularly order from perfect supplements.

Perfect supplements are my go-to for anything unique. I grab a lot of my green powders like chlorella, spirulina and Machinga there. and I also keep in stock some magnesium powder.

Since most of our soil is depleted in magnesium, we tend to be too and magnesium kicks butt for helping you sleep and induce calm, and for me staying headache-free.

Exclusive to Fitasamamabear listeners, Perfect Supplements is knocking off 10% of your entire order. If you use the code mamabear10 Just had to Perfect Supplements, use the code, save some money and boost your nutrient intake.

How To Reduce Processed Foods (3:33)

So back to how we can reduce processed foods in our everyday life to be healthy. The first thing I’d like you to do is to focus on changing one meal at a time.

Well, I would love for everyone to just up and drop process foods. I’m also realistic that that’s not going to happen. It definitely didn’t for me, and it probably won’t for you either, which is fine.

Choose one meal each day and switch it. If your breakfast normally consists of a bagel from the local coffee shop with cream cheese or a croissant with your coffee, strive to make a more nutrient-dense breakfast.

Aim for protein and fat. Same for fruits and veggies, but strive to eliminate anything that is store-bought, packaged or overly processed.

If you normally grab lunch out at the local burger joint, try making your own. Homemade burgers are amazing, and you can load up with a side dish of veggies. Strive to reduce your processed foods.

A lot of the time we struggle with snacks, especially because we don’t know what to eat. The truth is there’s actually a lot of really great natural brands out there now, which is awesome. However, there’s a catch to them: read the ingredients.

A lot of the times you think that something is super healthy when in reality it’s loaded up on sugars or sunflower oils or all of these things that we can’t overly process. If I could, I would have absolutely everyone make their own snacks and attempt to make their own meals.

But I do understand that that’s a little bit of a sticky point for people. For me personally, it took me a long time to be able to cook all of my own meals. So, I don’t expect that from everyone.

But if you have big goals and if trying to be healthy is your main focus, you need to stop eating crap. Even for weight loss.

A lot of people see those transformation pictures of someone who is a hundred pounds down or even 50 pounds down, whatever kind of is in the back of your mind. They wonder how they did it in such a short amount of time.

The average weight loss is one to two pounds per week, so losing a hundred pounds is nuts. But you see a lot of people losing 230 pounds in 30 60 days on these diets. And the reason why is because they straight up eliminated all processed foods.

If you look at whole30 you’re not allowed to go grab a donut or a store-bought cake. If you look at carnivore, you’re not really going to go grab a packaged protein bar from the grocery store.

All of those little things that we think are healthy or that we’re just using for convenience really add up and we don’t acknowledge it and it drives me absolutely bananas.

I don’t think that you need to jump on a specific diet in order to see results, whether that’s health-wise or weight-wise, but I do think you need to make eliminating processed foods a huge goal of yours. Even if your goals currently aren’t aesthetic base, you should make these changes.

The first step, the most basic step before you do anything would be to eliminate processed foods.

Which Processed Foods To Eliminate To Be Healthy (6:33)

For you, that may be reducing or eliminating junk food. A lot of people are chip eaters or donut lovers or just store-bought dessert fanatics. Try just cutting those out, ignore your meals and just try eliminating those things.

Then take it a step further, change a meal, then take it one step further: change your snacks. It doesn’t have to be done all at once, but it does need to be done if you want to be healthy.

The other thing I’d like to touch on with this is fluid intake. So, we don’t typically think of what we’re drinking, but it is water, teas, coffees, which are all amazing.

When you are loading up on whatever Frappuccino with double whip or cans of Coke or Fruitopia, you’re looking at processed foods. While we don’t want to admit it, you’re still looking at excess sugar and just empty calories.

The goal of eliminating processed foods is that you are replacing them with nutrient-dense foods. You want to consume actual nutrients. It’s those nutrients that help you build your body and help your body function properly.

If you are requiring your body to do anything, to look and to perform well, to feel awesome, to have great skin and hair and just have energy, you’re taking all of that away by consuming processed foods.

Step number one of any possible goal is to stop eating crap foods.
