My Journey To A Holistic Home
It’s take a lot of years for me to get to the point I am now with our household items (and it also started with lip chap & body butter!).. And each step, every swap has brought me closer to having a holistic, natural home. I made these changes because I believe in them but also because I enjoy them. I may not be a craftsy person but I do love making a lot of my own products!
If you’re like me, the word “hippie” involuntarily conjures up an image of a long flowing skirt, a lady who doesn’t shave her under arms and incense. Right?? I can’t be the only one who has that association…
And yet, there is so much more to the stereotype than this. In fact, there is a new type of hippie: The Modern Day Hippie.
How do I know this?
Because I am one.
Creating a more holistic home has been quite the adventurous journey for me. In fact, most of my lifetime friends can’t quite believe how far I have delved into creating a chemical free house. Sometimes, I can’t believe it myself.
My experience started one Christmas when I bored. Yup, just plain bored. The festivities were over, I didn’t go back to work for another week and at this point I hadn’t yet had Baby Bear.
As I browsed the internet (the cure for boredom of course) I stumbled upon a blog about making your own body butter. Honestly the picture looked like whip cream and I kind of wanted to lick my computer screen so intrigued, I clicked it. And then life as I knew it went crazy. HA.
After reading more about homemade lotions and butters I decided to give them a try. The first step was tracking down all the ingredients. If you’re not a health nut, shae butter and beeswax are kind of hard to find 😛
The more I started reading the more engrossed I became with making my own items – who knew all this was possible?! It went from lotions and lip chaps to cleaners and bug spray. To top it off, I’m Dutch, so this naturally, venture was perfect for me as I am notoriously frugal 😉
Within the course of the next two years I had gone from scoffing at people like me to making so many household items.
But with any adventure, along the way there have been a lot of fails. Some minor and some major (like accidentally stripping all the toilet seats in the house!) and all of them mildly entertaining.
Part of the fun has been the ability to experiment, laugh and know that regardless, I am doing the best I can for my family.. and saving money too!
And like most mama bears, once I had Baby bear I started reading more and more about what ingredients are in our day to day products. I knew that I wanted to keep her as healthy as possible and for me, much of that means having the right stuff around the house.
It is undeniably, totally true that I have gone from health nut to hippie. I will be the first to admit that my lifestyle is not for everyone and very different than most.
It took me a long time to get to this point. There’s been lots of trials, errors and laughter along the way.
I didn’t try to change my entire house at once. However, once I realized how easy many of the swaps were, I became hooked and the gradual process began. And while not every recipe I tried worked (cough cough like the epic fail of homemade shampoo!) I have most definitely loved the journey….though I promise to still shave my underarms, no matter how holistic I get 😉
If you’re just jumping into holistic living, why not try making your own laundry detergent or lip chap?
