A Quest For Deodorant A Happy Rock Ending
Deodorant is tricky business when you’re striving to be a natural mama (read about my journey here!). On one hand you want a deodorant that works well, smells good and don’t have to reapply often but on the other hand you want one without all the chemicals seen in today’s popular brands.
And having been on the hunt for this mythical, perfect deodorant I can tell you it’s not easy to find one you like!
Too often I’ve found ones that smell pretty only to find they wear off ten minutes later. Or ones that stick to my underarms, create a paste and smell of patchouli (I despise this smell). I’ve had deodorants that left everything I own greasy. I’ve has ones that somehow made me sweat more (by clogging my glands I presume). I’ve tried, homemade, store bought, online bought and sprays.
In the past three years I have truthfully tried everything.
Even before I went the natural route I struggled with deodorant. You see, I’m fairly active (cough cough). Okay, I’m very active. In my real life I’m a strength coach and dance instructor. Meaning, I spend the majority of my days moving.. which means sweating.
So I don’t just need your regular run of the mill deodorant. I need a damn good deodorant so I don’t stink while training! And so the quest began. When I first started my diy tendencies, I tried making my own deodorant. It’s not that it worked horribly but it took a lot of work compared to other homemade projects and I couldn’t get it to smell non-hippie like. Actually I hated the smell with a passion.
From there I went to using a bare minimum mixture of shae butter/coconut oil & beeswax. This worked for a brief time until it made me sweat more.
After a couple of months of getting frustrated every time I raised my arms I decided to give in and go for store bought. I tried green beaver which accomplished absolutely nothing not five minutes later. I tried Toms, but again did jack all. I tried a couple other natural grocery store brands and no luck.
From there I moved on to purchasing effing expensive natural deodorants from other companies. At one point, I paid $22 for goddamn deodorant. I was not impressed. Even less so when it didn’t work,
At this point – three years into my quest- I was using a combination of a deodorant that worked pretty well but didn’t have a great scent to it and a body spray. it was getting me through the day but barely.
And then I went to VegFest here in London. A lot of vendors were selling natural homemade products and finally (finally!) someone attempted deodorant. As I was in the middle of smelling the ten sample deodorants Kelly from Happy Rock Holistics came over to chat.
I told her about my deodorant quest. The pain staking methods I had gone to in order to find an under arm solution! She then proceeded to tell me how awesome her deodorant was (pfft. I had heard that one before) and what scents they came in. To be honest, I didn’t listen too much to her spiel until she recommended I smell her Raznilla stick. It instantly caught my nose and I sniffed again. I actually liked it.
One of the biggest problems I’ve had with deodorant is that I don’t want to smell like a hippie all the bloody time. I hate patchouli, I don’t want a lavender type smell. I just want something sweet, refreshing & girly.
This deodorant solved that problem. It actually smelled good. I checked out the price (twelve bucks) and decided it was worth the investment. After all I had spent a lot more on much smaller sticks.
The next week I put it to the test. This deodorant held up through 6 of my own personal workouts, nineteen training /dance clients as well as chasing a toddler around each day. By the end of each day I still smelled pretty good.
And just like that I became hooked. After three years of trying , countless bucks, I have found a deodorant that I truly like. It’s natural. All the ingredients look good and if I really truly wanted to I could make it (but I don’t). It keeps sweating under control, goes on smooth (not like some sticky ones I’ve tried!) and most importantly it makes me smell good for the entire day. Overall, it’s a win.
I wish I could express how unbelievably happy I am to have FINALLY found a deodorant I can depend on. Something I didn’t think could be done finally happened. The perfect deodorant is no longer mythical.. it’s Raznilla from Happy Rocks Holistic.
If you’re in my shoes (or I guess sweaty under arms??) check it out.
